computer runs hot 82-90C

2008-07-29, 21:07 PM

Is there any way to control the fans on my X61 laptop? My computer runs extremely hot and is not comfortable to sit on my legs/lap since it is so hot.

Your fans are probably clogged with dusts, you should clean it by blowing compressed air into the vent.

I had exactly the same problem and finally sent it in to Lenovo for repair.  So far so good.  Unfortunately, they didn't tell me what they did but I assume they did something to the cpu and/or heatsink.

I have another related issue now I'm afraid.  The T7500 cpu often reveals that it's running at a fraction of its 2.20GHz capacity.  The computer will be sluggish and when I check, sure enough, it's running as though it were a single core unit around 800MHz.

This is my first and last Lenovo.  Too bad it's only four months old.  I'm already looking forward to my next ASUS.  I never should have abandoned them.

My friend's ASUS takes 1.3 hour to shutdown.

you probably aren't running any applications that fully tax the processor and bring it out of power-save mode.   try running cinebench's multi-processor rendering test while monitoring core speed using cpu-z.

also, make sure your CPU is fully enabled.   boot into the BIOS by pressing the F1 key at startup, then go to Config > CPU > Core Multi-Processing and make sure it is set to "Enabled".

Interesting.  Thanks for the info.

What I just discovered, and it should have occurred to me earlier, is that the power saving mode got changed by Lenovo when I sent it in for servicing.  I changed it back to Minimal Power Management and the unit is taking advantage of its full power potential, but is also running too hot again.

At this juncture, I have to decide whether or not the balance of the warranty is worthwhile to me.  I'd read somewhere that one guy jerry-rigged a heat sink to his cpu to help dissipate heat.  OTOH, maybe I just let this thing 86 itself and file a claim with Lenovo.

A good question would be, what is the ambient temperature where you use your laptop. Also it is the policy of solectron the depot repair for the worker not to use or access your harddrive, as soon as your laptop arrive they take out your harddrive and put in their own service harddrive. This is one of the reason why depot repairer don't fix software problems. Some people send in their laptop minus their harddrive to protect their sensitive information.
