external monitor flickers when connected by USB-C

2021-07-17, 9:18 AM

I am having problems connecting a Dell Ultrasharp UP2720Q monitor to my Thinkpad X1 Carbon gen. 6 via the USB-C to USB-C cable included with the monitor.

When I connect the cable to one of the two Thunderbolt ports on my laptop, I get a good image (currently running at 3840 x 2160, 60p refresh rate). However, the image is unstable: at random intervals, the screen flashes to black for several seconds before the image returns.

I have taken the following steps to address the problem:

- updated all drivers and BIOS via the Lenovo Vantage module
- tested the monitor at various refresh rates: 30p, 59p, etc.
- set the laptop's battery threshold to a maximum of 85% (as suggested in this thread)
- disconnected all devices from the monitor's USB hub
- connected the laptop's power pack to the second Thunderbolt port

None of these steps resolved the issue. My system information is

- Windows 10 Home x64 10.0.19042 Build 19042
- Display Adapter: Intel UHD 620, driver version 27.20.100.8935 (28 Oct 2020)
- BIOS version N23ET76W (1.51), 21 Apr 2021
- Monitor driver: Dell UP2720Q version 1.0.0.0

This seems like a relatively common problem, but I'm not aware of anyone who has found a solution. I'm at the end of my rope! Does anyone have an idea of what else I should try?

Hi Lorenzo. Yes, as mentioned above, I have already installed all available updates including these updates to the Thunderbolt firmware and the Lenovo Intelligent Thermal solution.

In case anyone finds this thread in the future, I resolved this problem by purchasing a compatible cable. The monitor in question came with an active Thunderbolt 3 cable, which one might assume would work. However, I learned that my X1 Carbon gen 6 requires a USB-C cable that supports DisplayPort 1.2 (or 1.4) Alt Mode. I purchased the cable below, and it appears to have resolved the issue:

HI gollux,

Did you have this issue before?

I did recall similar issue which was after Windows update so perhaps checking Windows with recent KB updates can help.

This monitor is new. I did not have the same issue with my previous monitor, but I connected to that monitor via HDMI rather than usb-c.

I have taken a look at recent windows updates, and I do not see any reports of issues associated with those updates.

Hello gollux,

Greetings

Have you updated the Thunderbolt firmware?
I would also suggest that you run the Lenovo Intelligent Thermal solution update.
Update us how it goes.

Regards,
Lorenzo_Lenovo
