Hello,
we got a delivery of 15 X240 laptops this week.
Unfortunately we cannot set the hard disk1 password in the BIOS.
This option ist completely unvisible in the BIOS. We can set supervisor, power-on, ... but not hard disk1 password.
Any idea?
The laptops come with BIOS 2.12. We already tried the latest 2.17, but unfortunately with no effect.
Two weeks ago we received another two X240 of the same type and visible hard disk1 password option in BIOS.
Type: 20AL0076GE
Thank you for your help.
Regards

Hi fflamme, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!
Perhaps Microsoft eDrive is enabled?

Hi Bananaman,
we do not use Bitlocker.
The hard disk password option is invisible on the laptops with original lenovo installation and our own Windows 7 installations. It seems to be a operating system independent problem.

This was a problem on some 40-series systems (like X240) that were manufactured prior to December 27, 2013.
The problem is that the eDrive feature of the SSD was accidently enabled in the Lenovo factory. And an enabled eDrive cannot have a HDD password.
You can either fix this problem yourself, or you can call Lenovo and request service.
To fix the problem yourself:
1. Remove the SSD from the system (the hardware maintenance manual explains how to do this).
2. Write down the 32-character PSID value which is printed on the drive label.
3. Reinstall the SSD.
4. Run a special tool that I provide that will revert the drive to factory state and security deactivated. This will wipe the contents of the drive - but then you can set HDD password and reimage it.
If you want to do it yourself, let me know and I will give you the tools you need. Also let me know if your X240 systems have Samsung or LiteOn SSDs.

Dear someotherguy,
We want to fix the problem ourselves.
Please send me the tools.
Shall we post the PSID values and if its LiteOn or Samsung here or send it to you directly?

Dear someotherguy,
we changed our decision: We want the lenovo service to do the repair of the ssd disk of the 15 notebooks.
It's not that easy to open the x240 as we thought.
We will contact lenovo service.
Thank you.

Hello someotherguy,
the lenovo support just wants to swap the motherboard which are also not on stock. But I think this doesn't change our problem.
So we want to try it on our own.
Can you send us a manual with the easiest way to open the X240, so we can take out the hard disks and write down the numbers.
Regards
Fabian

I opened one of the X240. It contains a Samsung SSD. Now 14 laptops to go.
I don't know if they all contain Samsung drives yet.
Please provide me the tools and the commands/manual to reset the drives to factory and disable the security.
Regards
Fabian
