mSATA for X230

2020-04-06, 4:37 AM

I have an X220 and an X230 which both can use mSATA drives.

The FRU manuals show some very small capacity mSATA drives but today much larger capacity units are available.

The X230 is UEFI so I am not worried about capacity but the X220 is not as well off.

So any worries with 240GB mSATA drives or even 1TB ones?

mSATA for X230

Get them, no problems on both laptops. Just the x220' BIOS version should be not too old.

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g | hdd, msata ssd, wwan, wifi, gps -- unique hand-made config
ThinkPad 25 Special Anniversary Edition. #Retro. Signed by D.Hill
T470p | X1 Carbon Gen3 | Miix 2 10" | Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android) + BT Keyboard
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 Wireless Router, HDD 1 TB, BT Speaker, Power Bank, Mobile Projector

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Hello,

I boot my X220 off a 256GB mSATA SSD, so that size should work, and there's no reason a larger drive shouldn't work, either.  As @x220forme noted, make sure you have the latest BIOS firmware installed first.

Hola!!! Yo estoy viendo de cambiar en mi Thinkpad x230 el HDD por un SSD de 500GB. El mSATA se conecta reemplazando la placa de WIFI? O tiene un slot de conexión libre específi9co? Gracias!

No the WiFi board remains in place, there is another slot nearby for a mobile card that can be used for mSATA instead

Read the manual and you will see the location for mSATA is documented

found an even more exotic solution with dual microSD cards. These SD cards are now up to 512GB and I think I saw a 1TB version recently.

I ordered up a Kingston UV500 which is available in the mSATA format.

Soon enough I will be testing it in my x230 to start.

If this is successful I will likely do the same for my X220.
