mSata Samsung 850 EVO SSD in X220... 2101 Detection Error HDD2

2016-02-22, 14:47 PM

I tried very hard to find an official answer. I had my x220 bios updated to 1.40 version and installed the mSata 500GB EVO SSD drive to the laptop. It has never been detected successfully.

It was a big hard to insert the mSata drive to the slot and finally it was in the write position I'm pretty sure and the screw is aligned...

Any idea?

I have only tried a couple mSATA SSDs in my ThinkPad X220, but each one was detected immediately without any error.

Do you know if the 500GB Samsung 850 EVO mSATA SSD worked before you used it?  Perhaps you could try it in another machine, or with an mSATA to 2.5" adapter, just to verify that it works correctly?  Although it is pretty rare to occur, you could have gotten one that is just not working.

Removing and reseating carefully the SSD card may work sometimes, but you sould try this before :

- remove the battery ;
- the battery being removed, press ten times the power button during one second each time ;
- press the power button again during thirty seconds ;
- connect the battery, and maybe your laptop will boot then normally.

This tip worked for me on a X220, (with a mSata SSD Crucial M4 CT256M4SSD3 ) and it is pretty easier than removing the keyboard, and so on...
This works probably because you need draining the whole electric power remaining in he machine's condensers, in order to "clean" the system and to wipe out the error from inside the machine.

This tip will not avoid that "error" to occur from time to time, but it allows the computer to start again in less than two minutes.

Let us hope mSata SSDs are going to be more compatible with the BIOS of the Lenovo laptops in the future...
