pagefile.sys and virtual ram

2010-11-29, 20:26 PM

Hi Guys,

I just added RAM to my laptop (an x201) to 8GB and realized my hdd space srhink 6GB! then I realize that the pagefile.sys is now 7.8GB. I figured out that it is a virtual memory paging file.

I just wonder do you guys change this or just let the computer automatically manage this? I doubt I'll run out of 8GB of physical RAM, plus my SSD is only 120GB so i'm wondering if I should change it

Thanks

Olive

Yes should be a good idea disable it or manually set the file to somethyng like 100MB min / 2 gig max

Consider also the ibernation file, booting the system is fast so it is also a good idea to disable the ibernation.

search also for ssd tweaker it can enable and disable other (ssd related) performance tweaks.

P.S. it is not just a space problem, consider also the wearing implications.

I see. Thank you.

I'll disable Hibernation. Right now it is just Turned off, not disabled.

I hesitate to tweak SSD using all of the machine keys tweak talked in other forums...

But anything else I should do besides reducing pagefile.sys to 2gig max? and disable hibernation?

Also one more question though not related to RAM, can factory reinstalled (revert back to factory state) lead to more wearing of SSD?

Thanks

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730 for disabling hibernation on Win 7. I agree it should be disabled. With 8GB of RAM why not just set your pagefile.sys to zero? I have 4GB on a X101e and have seen no problems with pagefile.sys off. You shouldn't need to revert to factory state except when your system won't boot or you sell your computer.

Thanks everyone for your suggestion. I changed to min 500gb, max is 2 GB.
But the funny thing is now my RAM is 6.9GB useable instead of 7.8GB as before - this is b/c there's hardware reserve. Is this because of the paging file?
what do you guys think?
