scrolling problem with touchpad/trackpoint

2010-07-30, 14:12 PM

since i've gotten my x201 i've been pretty happy with it. the only problem i've had with it is scrolling. on some applications such as itunes and AIM the program doesn't scroll. i've read a few entries saying that i have to modify the tp4table.dat file and it does work.my question is why is this necessary when other laptops don't need to do this. is this because synaptics drivers do not support scrolling in those applications yet? also how often does lenovo release new drivers to update support for more programs

Hello keviinf,

modify the tp4table.dat file is the one way, updating the ultra nav drivers could help also.

Please reboot your system after editing the tp4table.dat file.

Otherwise it won´t work.

I did some tweaks on my both systems too. Like enabling horizontal scrolling in Firefox.

yeah i know that i need to restart it but instead i just restart the tp4enh process (not sure if that's the exact name) and it still works. my driivers are the newest from lenovo. my main questions is why do i have to do this modification when other laptops probably don't

I'm having the same problem here.

X201, W7 32-bit, all Windows, application and driver updates installed.

Scrolling seems not to work at all in any applications that use other UI styles than the standard windows scrolling - anything with a custom GUI or unusual UI elements seems to throw the scrolling function off.

Examples so far:

Spotify

Wimp (a norwegian music streaming service, Adobe AIR powered)

Twhirl (Adobe AIR)

Steam

Windows Live Messenger Beta

Also, multitouch scrolling is quite finicky and often downright buggy - sudden jumps of half a screen or (far) more, scrolling in the wrong direction, unpredictable scrolling speeds, and periods of complete nonresponsiveness.

Scrolling settings: Single-touch disabled, multi-touch enabled, reversed scrolling directions. Otherwise default.

Also, why is there no sideways multi-touch scrolling?

This is clearly a driver issue, and should be fixed by Lenovo ASAP.

If I read an PDF it is not helpfull for scrolling at all.

Can somebody tell me where to get good updates that solve the problem?

Have you tried disabling Gesture Filtering in the UltraNav's Smart Check Settings?

It's in the Trackpad Settings under the Mouse Properties's (Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Mouse) UltraNav tab. Expand the Smart Check Settings and click on Gesture Filtering and uncheck the 'Enable Gesture Filtering'. You may want to see if disabling the other options under the Smart Check Settings like Scrolling Region Filtering, Edge Tap Filtering, and PalmCheck to see if that makes the trackpad usable again for scrolling.

For trackpoint, I find that changing the scroll setting to smooth instead of standard made it better for me (and it doubles as a middle mouse button when set to smooth).

Also, responding to a resurrection of a thread, sorry.

Wondering the same thing... There's no chance Lenovo (or even the community) could possibly cover every single program that needs the fix. Why can't they make it work universally, independently from "support" and "updates" (those are curse words for me).

The touchpad in my previous machine worked universally. My current optical mouse works perfectly... wait, no it doesn't. The ultranav interferes with it occasionally (changes wheel scrolling speed to unusably slow 1 row per notch). Well, at least all programs do respond to my usb mouse. It can't be that hard for the touchpad.

Also, I've tried the fix to get scrolling to work in Steam but no success. I've added the following to TP4table.dat (and, of course, restarted the system):

; Steam
*,*,Steam.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9

; GameOverlayUI
*,*,GameOverlayUI.exe,*,*,*,WheelStd,0,9
