Looking for alternatives to Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9 due to massive throttling issues

2021-05-21, 9:44 AM

Hi @ all

due to the massive throttling issues with the X1 Carbon 9 impacting basically all devices and still no fix available from Lenovo, i am thinking now on alternatives to Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon Gen 9.

Is there something out there that is worthwhile to consider like with an i7 around 3-4 GHz, 32+GB RAM, 4K display and somewhat the same size of the X280 or the X1C9?

Would appreciate to get your perspective here.

Best

X1 Extreme Gen 3 is a very viable alternative; we are very satisfied with it ;)

It's a 15.6" LCD screen, in very similar size format as X1 Carbon series.

We've been constant user of X1 Carbon 14" LCD for the past few years,

but due to the amount of time spent looking at the screen we've decided to upgrade :)

Unfortunatelly the X1 Extreme series are still quite large compared to the X1C9.. so not really an option for me. Thanks anyway!

Thanks Lorenzo! The thing is that Yoga G6 is also suffering with the throttling issue! So not an option… but thanks. Best

Another option is to wait for the BIOS/ECFW fix from Lenovo.

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.
I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

Thanks! But the question still remains when will this fix will be available? If it is solved in couple of months then i have a device sitting next to me worth of over 3k€ and not usable.. there are better ways to spend the money...

Honestly, we have both X1 Carbon and X1 Extreme, and both units are not much different in size/weight.

I personally have been extensively using X1 Carbon (Gen 3, Gen 4).

I personally have been extensively using X1 Extreme (Gen 1, Gen 3).

~Look at 2min 20sec it will show X1 Extreme and X1 Carbon side by side.

~The size is not that much bigger; X1 Extreme is the size of an older 14" ThinkPad T410 which I've also travelled extensively with, but feels thinner & lighter!

~I'm also into this portable/small form factor ThinkPad, fully agree with you, since I bring ThinkPad to/from work everyday.

~X1 Carbon series has been very small and portable.

~X1 Extreme also fits into my backpack which was designed for 14" notebook computer!

~X1 Extreme is also so light that I have to double-check that it's in my backpack; actually went away once without X1 Extreme in my backpack!

Again thanks for your feedback but the dimensions are quite different:

X1G9 X1EG3
315x221.6x14.9 mm 362x246x18.4 mm
1.13 kg 1.71 kg

So there is quite a difference...
