uefi installation from recovery disks?

2011-07-15, 18:24 PM

Hi!

Yesterday I have bought Crucial M4 128GB and now I want to install windows from in in the UEFI native mode. But my recovery disks arent bootable in this mode. Is there any way to install factory image from recovery disks in uefi mode? I supose I need to make new bootloader or smth? Anybody have tried to do that? I DONT want to use legacy mode.

Apparently, yes, but there are also some caveats as mentioned in the KB.

What did you mean by saying "caveats"?

Limitations such as:

"a.  bitlocker won't work (BIOS fix coming in July/August)
          b.  fingerprint software won't work (new software release coming in July/August)

          c.  on W520, you can't install Win7 on a hardware RAID volume (BIOS fix TBD)

          d.  Rescue and Recovery won't work (new software release coming in July/August)

          e.  3rd-party full-disk encryption software won't work (e.g. Sophos SafeGuard, WinMagic SecureDoc, McAfee EEPC etc).  We are working with those companies on UEFI support but I think that will go well into 2012."

You could also try this:

Recovering BIOS-based systems to UEFI-based and vice versa

http://www.acronis.com/support/documentation/ABR11/index.html#12540.html

It would be some extra time over a straight EFI install but you could make an image of the installed pre-load image for it to convert and restore, or a system installed using the recovery media, also if you use the preload image once you convert to GPT you can't recover using the preload image from the desktop, you would have to reinstall/convert as MBR for it to work again. Same goes for using the recovery discs. Also per the doc once the disc is converted to GPT it cannot be converted back to MBR (technically it can but you don't get bootable volume types). You would have to go back to BIOS mode, convert the disc back to MBR then start over.) but otherwise looks quite good...If you go this route also get the Acronis Universal Restore option and you can create vm images of an hd as well.
