I have bought Thinkpasd x61 7675 CTO with 3-yr warranty with windows vista. The hard drive that I ordered was 160 GB 7200. The hard drive has been filled up very quickly and now I would like to upgarde it to a 500 GB hard drive. I have several questions regarding the warranty, migartion, re-installing windows vista and my applications:
1-I talked to tech-support and the person said there might be an issue regarding warranty if I upgrade it to 500 GB. I appreciate any further insight into the statement.
2- I would like to install a 500 GB 7200 Seagte hard drive. Does Thinkapsd X61 is capable of operating such a hard drive? is there any compatbility issue that I should be considering?
3- How can I migrate my window vista and applications to be installed on the new hard drive? Is there any online help from lenovo?

1. Installing a non-Lenovo drive will not affect the warranty on the rest of your ThinkPad. The only issue is that the replacement HD, unless you buy it from Lenovo, won't be covered by your ThinkPad warranty. If the drive fails you would need to get warranty coverage from Seagate (who IIRC offer 5 years on their HDs.)
2. The X61 uses SATA interface drives so it should have no problem with this Seagate.
3.There are other threads on this forum that describe various procedures. If you have recovery media you can restore it to your new HD. You will then need to update the operating system and drivers, as well as reinstall your applications, restore data from backup, etc. Another simpler and faster approach is to use software like Acronis True Image to "clone" your current HD onto the new one.For that you will need to put your new HD inside the X61 and attach the old one using either an Ultrabase or external USB drive enclosure.
