want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

2016-01-07, 19:51 PM

Hey guys I want to update my laptop RAM Lenovo ThinkPad X 201 3680PW9  to. But I will have ordered via the Internet so it would be almost impossible to be retained or invoiced if it does not work.:smileysad:

I want to know what is the best option to upgrade the RAM 8 GB (2X4GB) or 12 GB (1X4GB+1X8GB)?
What is the best RAM brand compatible with this model ?

Thanks alot

Max supported by this serie is 2x 4GB RAM, a 8GB module will not work.

You'd need SODIMM modules DDR3-8500 (DDR3-1066) or DDR-10600 (DDR3-1333). DDR3-12800 will most probably not work (I never managed to get one working in mines)

Stick to well known brands like:

  • Samsung
  • Elpida
  • Kingston (but avoid the "Value RAM" series)
  • Hynix
  • Crucial
  • Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" series)
  • A-Data

Re: want to upgrade thinkpad x201 ram?

Hi!

I own a good old x201 and want to upgrade my RAM to 8GB.

But i'm not sure of what I should buy.

Running Arch Linux on my machine so don't give windows fixes :)

But the "lshw -c memory" gives the following information.

 *-memory
description: System Memory
physical id: 2a
slot: System board or motherboard
size: 4GiB
*-bank:0
description: SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1066 MHz (0.9 ns)
product: M471B5673FH0-CF8
vendor: Samsung
physical id: 0
serial: 439BAC69
slot: DIMM 1
size: 2GiB
width: 64 bits
clock: 1066MHz (0.9ns)
*-bank:1
description: SODIMM DDR3 Synchronous 1334 MHz (0.7 ns)
product: M471B5673FH0-CH9
vendor: Samsung
physical id: 1
serial: 621674C9
slot: DIMM 2
size: 2GiB
width: 64 bits
clock: 1334MHz (0.7ns)

So I have one 1066MHz and one 1333MHz installed.

But the only RAMs that I find in Sweden that is DDR3 SODIMM is:

Corsair 1066MHz: https://www.komplett.se/product/638188/datorutrustning/datorkomponenter/minne/corsair-ddr3-1066mhz-8gb-sodimm-mac#

Corsair 1333MHz: https://www.komplett.se/product/650401/datorutrustning/datorkomponenter/minne/corsair-ddr3-1333mhz-8gb-sodimm-mac#

Will these work or shall I search for some other RAMs?

I have also heard that some people have been talking about 1600MHz RAM.

Working in x201 or?

Welcome to the forum!

I'd stick to either DDR3-10600 or DDR3-8500 (the latter is rare to find lately), some users have reported to get DDR3-12800 modules but my X201 never run with such RAM.

Generally speaking, you should avoid any no-name brand and any model using the word "value" or "economy" on it. My own experience with Corsair memory is that the "Vengeance" line always work, the Corsair branded for Mac's normally do work as well.

Other brands you can look for are Adata, Samsung, Crucial, Hynix, and Elpida.

I hope the above helps! Good luck with your purchase! (Also check the vendor accepts returns, just in case)

Thank you for the clarification.

Yes most webshops in sweden gives 14-30 days return and this place have never been bad when it comes to support.

Will order a pair and hope for the best :)

Yay! Memories have arrived and has been installed.

It booted without any problems :) 8GB RAM happy and "purring" :)

I bought the Corsair DDR3 1333MHz (PC3-10600) 8GB SODIMM MAC

That made some diffrence in loading speeds and so on.

Next upgrade will be a SSD :D

Thanks for the help
