what drivers do i need for clean installation

2012-10-03, 17:31 PM

Hi all:

I have X220

I want to clean install windows 7 pro

During the installation, i am prompted to insert a driver CD/DVD

and i don't have it.

I plan to download the drivers from lenovo's website.

But there are so many drivers, which one would be enough ?

Thanks in advance

First off, I'd look at Device Manager to see which items are showing a "!" and try to resolve them. Please let us know what you see and we'll try to point you to the correct drivers.

Next, I would install ThinkVantage System Update to see which drivers it finds for your machine. Video, power management, power manager, hotkeys/on-screen display, NIC drivers... all are good candidates. Once you've finished with TVSU, you can scan the driver matrix for anything it may have missed.

Thank you for the reply.

First of all, I'm on Linux system now.

Secondly,I know what drivers I need. I know where to download those drivers on Lenovo's webiste. But most of them are .exe file. Shall I put all those .exe file into one USB flash and insert the USB when the system prompt me for drivers ?

Generally the only driver that you may have to download manually from Lenovo's support site is for Ethernet. In recent years Windows has drivers for that included on the CD so even that manual download may be unnecessary. Once you have that, as Sarbin says, download TVSU and let it determine what else you need. Then let it download and install all that stuff for you.

My apologies. I read your 1st post and thought you had completed the basic Win7 install.

I've never had a Win7 clean install prompt me for a driver disk. Installing from Lenovo recovery media will prompt for as many disks as there are in the set, though.

So, to clarify, what type of install are you trying to do? Clean from retail media or an OEM recovery install from Lenovo media.

Regards.

How are you doing that install? It should be looking for the drivers (and finding them) on the Windows disk. Are you perhaps not booting from the install disk? Once everything is up and running you can update the drivers from the Lenovo site.

Ok.

What kind of Win7 disk did the store sell you? Does it look legitimate?

Again, I've never had a retail Win7 disk, either full install type or upgrade type, ask me to insert a driver disk while installing. The installer should have no trouble getting you all the way to a functional Win7 desktop with hardware as current as an X220.

Regards.

You may be making this complicated for us to help you. In this post you wrote that you downloaded an ISO file you found on the net. Here you say you bought a DVD.

You will need an official Win7 disk (or real ISO) that matches the type of Windows product key that you own. A legitimate Win 7 disk will not ask for drivers.

Boot from Win 7 install disk

Follow prompts

Enjoy

If you are doing anything but that then you don't have a real Win 7 disk.
