[x1 extreme gen 3] trackpoint is not working. any ideas?

tl;dr trackpoint fails to move pointer, left/right "mouse buttons" do nothing evnen in BIOS, trackpoint is enabled in BIOS, visible in windows device manager, windows device manager reports device as functioning properly, there are no external mouse plugged in, in synaptics trackpoint app trackpoint is disabled and radio-button is disabled as well (I can't click on it to enable it)

 

What I tried:

* deleting device in windows device manager

* deleting drivers in windows device manager

* disabling and then enabling trackpoint back in BIOS

 

I'm not even sure that trackpoint ("nipple" itself is moving properly, since I haven't used it much yet), but at least "physical buttons" should be working? It's just a little bit over month old laptop :(

 

According to windows update center and to lenovo vantage everything is up to date (even bios) - no outdated bios, drivers, firmware, everything available is installed 

 

Trackpoint was working just fine in first weak, then I switched to external mouse (lenovo wireless combo) and worked from there. laptop was perfectly still for a whole month on a cooling pad (disabled, used just for better angle and general elevation) and now when I'm in the middle of preparing for a trip I discovering that my maxed out lenovo laptop bought on a lenovo website with maxed out warranty) has unresponsive trackpoint. cool. ticket for support is already opened, but judging by this community it will probably will be slow at best, so I'm trying this at the same time.

 

Any suggestions what to check or what to do?

Kindly try these steps:


Go to settings>mouse>under Synaptics Trackpoint, click Settings

Toggle the switch OFF and ON

Make sure that "Leave trackpoint ON while mouse is connected"

last two lines in "tl;dr" section

 

 in synaptics trackpoint app trackpoint is disabled and radio-button is disabled as well (I can't click on it to enable it)

 

anyhow. magically all is working now again. no visible additional updates, no reboots, no change of settings. just when using wireless mouse noticed that trackpoint is working again

If the problem persists randomly, it could be caused by hardware malfunction.

Is the computer under warranty? I suggest that you contact the Hardware tech support, otherwise you may go to your local hardware technician for  repairs.

Yup. Laptop is under warranty (2 months old). I already contacted so-called premier support two  weeks ago. I've got one email (5 days to respond to first one and no followups to my next two emails still), two appointments (4-5hrs windows, nobody came; but I spend my whole day off in vain awaiting lenovo tech) and a phone call, which after brief wait revealed that my part is still ~1100 miles away and never actually left a warehouse, so two confirmed appointments were ... let's say misguided. 

 

I've got a "great" experience with lenovo so far every step of the way - starting from sales and up to all levels of support with maxed out warranty and services

Is there a way to close this thread? It was hardware problem after all - change of trackpoint solved it (3 or 4 days without problems for now)
