x120e CPU fan always on -- vibrating

2011-11-05, 22:41 PM

Hi folks,

I just got a Thinkpad x120e E350, and the fans are running constantly regardless of whether the cooling settings are set to active or passive. The cpu fan in particular is very annoying since it makes the whole chassis vibrate. I could maybe tolerate the loud noises, but the vibrations are really uncomfortable. Is there any way to slow down or fix these fans?

Thanks.

Hello,

Have you run ThinkVantage System Update to ensure the X120e is up to date with all of software, including the BIOS, power and thermal management programs?

When you say vibrations, do you mean rattling sounds? Do the keys start shaking near the fan?

Personally, when/if I set the fan on max it just starts sucking/blowing a whole lot more air (with the accompanying wind noise), but no other noticeable vibrations that affect the chassis in general. If you have more than that, you might have an unbalanced fan, and might want to RMA the whole thing to get it fixed/replaced.

Hi guys. Thanks for the responses.

Aryeh: Yes, I've updated everything via ThinkVantage, even the BIOS (now ver. 1.15). I mentioned in another thread that I had gotten a blue screen memory core dump message the first time I tried to upgrade the BIOS. I tried it again, making sure to have Norton turned off and nothing running, etc, and it worked. The interesting thing is that the main fan, which is not causing the vibration, now fluctuates in intensity. Its quiet when the processor isn't working hard. The cpu fan, however, still blasts constantly.

wildone81: Its not rattling or shaking, just vibrating like an electric razor. Most noticeable at the base of the keyboard. I've never felt anything like it on any other laptop.

So there's two problems:

1. the cpu fan speed doesn't vary.

2. the cpu fan causes chassis vibration.

Could the fan physically be not placed/connected right? And would it void my warranty or anything if I opened her up to see?

Actually I think its the hard drive... and it sounds like a fan - weird. It's a 7200rpm drive. This can't be normal. Ya think Lenovo support will replace my hard drive?

Hello,

I think it would be a good idea to contact them and explain the situation. I never used the HDD in my X120e—I replaced it with an SSD when i got the unit, but I cannot imagine there being a constant vibration when the unit was in use.  As far as I know, hard disk drives in notebooks eventually spins down after they have not been used for a while in order to preserve battery life.

Re: x120e CPU fan always on -- vibrating

I am having this problem as well. The fan is running full blast all the time if set to BIOS control. This eventually leads to the fan "grinding" after about 10-15 minutes of this.

I have been getting around the problem by using TPFanControl and setting it at a very high threshhold but this is not a acceptable solution. How do I go about getting this fixed or the fan replaced?
