x121e BIOS update bootable image appears empty

2018-07-26, 15:36 PM

When attempting to download bootable image for bios upgrade for my x121e I seem to get an empty non bootable iso.

https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/gb/en/products/LAPTOPS-AND-NETBOOKS/THINKPAD-X-SERIES-LAPTOPS/THINKPAD-X121E/3045/304579G/LR1RYA3/downloads/DS019252

I use the above link to download 8quj12us.iso, but viewing it via linux command line 'isoinfo -i 8quj12us.iso -l' it apears to be empty.  I have written image to USB device via etcher and this explians that the image is not bootable and again looking at the resultant image it is empty and not bootable.

I have confirmed checksum via sha256sum.

Can lenovo check that tis file is correct?

Chris

All the files on the ISO are marked hidden, but the data is there.

Thanks for feedback, I have checked using the ls command and no hiddenfiles are present, either run as a regular user or root access as below:-

$ sudo ls -la
total 6
dr-x------ 1 chris chris 2048 Jul 26 2013 .
drwxr-x---+ 3 root root 4096 Jul 26 17:23 ..

$

I see two problems, the image is not bootable and secondly apears to be empty.

Hi Chris1664, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

You're saying you can't boot from this image?

As sclexman says the data is hidden. There are many threads discussing this.

...

7zip is a popular way to look at the data.

Hope this helps!

I don't work for Lenovo. I'm a crazy volunteer!

bananaman beat me to it...

It's not empty.  7zip image below.  Went old school: downloaded, burned CD, booted on my T420 - image below.

I've not done it, but you may be able to make a bootable flash drive using geteltorito. Google is your friend.

This ISO for BIOS update is in El Torito format, Windows doesn't support it to manage. It's possible under Linux.
Direcct writing to USB stick doesn't work either, prior convertion to another IMG format is needed under Linux either.

x220 • Gobi 2000 3g | hdd, msata ssd, wwan, wifi, gps -- unique hand-made config
ThinkPad 25 Special Anniversary Edition. #Retro. Signed by D.Hill
T470p | X1 Carbon Gen3 | Miix 2 10" | Yoga Tablet 2-1050F (Android) + BT Keyboard
ThinkPad Stack • 2.4/5 Wireless Router, HDD 1 TB, BT Speaker, Power Bank, Mobile Projector

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Thank you - geteltorino worked well, I used the command:-

geteltorito 8quj12us.iso >> bios.img

to extract the boot image then used etcher to burn to usb.  From there I could boot and install update.

Thank you

Chris
