x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

Hello,

I've got a x131e laptop with BIOS Version G8ETA1WW (2.70 ).

Booting first shows the general BIOS info page and then a new screen:

Error: The non-volatile variable storage is about full.

Press F1 to enter Setup.

Howerver pressing F1 has no effect at all.

Before this issue the system was boot as desired.

Any Ideas?

Re: x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

Are you still able to boot up, but just not get into the BIOS to clear the error?

The info below is from a X250, but I would think that the process to clear the memory should be the same on yours too.

• Message: Error:

The System UEFI Variable Storage is nearly full.

Note: This error indicates that the operating system or applications cannot create, modify, or delete data
in the non-volatile system UEFI variable storage due to insufficient storage space after POST.
The non-volatile system UEFI variable storage is used by the UEFI BIOS and by the operating system or
applications. This error occurs when the operating system or applications store large amounts of data
in the variable storage. All data needed for POST, such as BIOS setup settings, chipset or platform
configuration data, are stored in a separate UEFI variable storage.
Solution:

Press F1 to enter ThinkPad Setup after the error message is displayed. A dialog asks the user
for confirmation to clean up the storage. If the user selects "Yes", all data that were created by the
operating system or applications are deleted except global variables defined by the Unified Extensible
Firmware Interface Specification. If the user selects "No", all data is kept, but the operating system or
applications will not be able to create, modify, or delete data in the storage

Re: x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

I'm unable too boot.

After the error message nothing happens - the normal OS boot process doesn't start, no further message is displayed and pressing F1 doesn't start the BIOS Setup.

No beeps either. Removing RAM causes the expected beeps.

Re: x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

That is strange.

You might try removing the backup/CMOS battery, lettting it sit for 5-10 minutes and then plugging it back in to reset the BIOS.

See Replacing the backup battery on page 81 below for instructions

Good Luck

Re: x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

Removed battery, power cord and CMOS battery for 20 minutes. Message now includes the expected time message:

0271: Real Time Clock Error - Check Date and Time settings.
Error: The non-volatile variable storage is about full. Press F1 to enter Setup.

No other change though.

Re: x131e fails to start BIOS Setup with F1 (Error: the non volatile variable storage is about full)

I am  having the same problem. Pushing F1 boots the OS normally, but F2 gets me into setup where there is no options regarding clearing memory.

What should I do?

Thanks

Andrés

Have you tried setting the BIOS to "Setup Defaults" (F9 I believe), then pressing F10 to Save and Exit?
