Re: x201 display issue (random changes to screen contrast ratio)

2010-12-30, 14:41 PM

Mark, James, and all others:

Originally, I had the issue with random contrast changes. After providing the description of my problem a few pages back, and subsequent BIOS/driver updates (standard update through ThinkVantage Toolbox), the contrast change had disappeared. Everything is excellent now. It has been working fine for good several months now. No issues at all!

I don't remember the exact update that "cured" my X201, but the combination of BIOS and all of the other updates from Lenovo did the trick!

Thanks!

P.S. In other words, it is not the latest drivers that helped me, but one of the previous sets of drivers that were available through ThinkVantage system update.

I am happy to report that this display contrast problem has disappeared after I updated the video driver. Thank you!

Re: x201 display issue (random changes to screen contrast ratio)

I wasn't lucky with this. I ran System Update today, which offered to update the Intel Graphics Driver with th new one. I had no "beta" driver installed. Just a clean default lenovo install.

I accepted, and during the installation I got a BSOD (blue screen) - weird because the laptop wasn't doing anything, and is a few weeks old, with no  software installed in the laptop other than basic MS Office. After reboot, I got dozens of errors in small windows all of them saying the same:

"C:\Windows\system32\igfxrENUl.rc is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error". The window won't go away until clicking OK some twenty or thirty times.

I tried re-installing the Intel graphics driver, but no change.

Needless to say I am very disappointed with the quality of Lenovo's software patching process.

This is with Windows 7 32bits. Any hint on how to fix this "system  update" triggered mess would be greatly welcome.

Thanks

@aripad,

Try downloading the package from the support page. Once done, boot into safe mode and uninstall the Intel GPU package manually then reboot again into normal windows and install the Intel driver.

Thanks JameZ - Just did - I uninstalled both the Intel video driver and something called "Intel Turbo boost" that seemed related. Then rebooted and the machine loaded into some very low resolution, but with no error.

Reinstalling the manually downloaded Intel video package brought things back to normal. The only thing is now I can't find the "Intel Turbo boost" package. Lenovo's driver matrix instead of a link for the Turbo boost, says "This is supported by the video driver". Wondering if this has changed with the latest driver and the turbo boost package is no longer needed.

@aripad,

Previously when I reinstall the Intel HD driver for my TP. There was 3 packages which the installer installed and Turbo Boost is one of them. Therefore the Turbo Boost driver could be packaged together with the Intel HD drivers.
