x220 Card Reader not working on Windows 8.1

2013-12-13, 10:34 AM

Hey,

So I installed Windows 8 (Clean install, no upgrades) on the machine and since then the card reader isnt working. I downloaded and installed the drivers from Lenovo Website and after failing from Driver Genius and then from ThinkVantage System Update 5.03. Still doesn't work, I install them, but after I reboot it is installed but the card reader doesn't work (It was working before on Windows 7 on the same day I installed W8). I updated to 8.1 and the problem continues.

Att,
Lucas

Did you manage to find a solution to this problem Lucas? (I'm thinking of upgrading Win 7 to 8.1 on my X220 but use my SDcard a lot)

On my X220, I originally had Win 7 and upgraded to Win 8, then later to Win 8.1. I've never had a problem with SD cards. I upgraded both times (not clean installs).

Hello,

Do you have the Lenovo-supplied driver installed?  If so, does uninstalling that, rebooting, and letting Microsoft Update obtain the driver make any difference?

@Aryeh: I don't suppose RichardW will want to uninstall the Lenovo driver given that his system is working fine :smileywink:

Instead could we look at versions of drivers that each of you is using?

E.g. on Win7 in Device Manager->Disk Drives my Ricoh SD Disk Device (which I'm guessing is the driver) mine says it's using 6.1.7600.16385 signed by MS and dated 21/06/2006 (sounds a bit old but maybe that's because it's Win7).

Thanks!

Simon
PS. I've got Win 8.1 on order now and am planning a fresh install so hoping we can get this to work...

Ditto ^

The Ricoh driver is 6.20.11.42, from:

Hope this helps!

I should add, after upgrading the system I did come to this site to check for Lenovo drivers (this thread: http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Driver-matrices-for-Win8-upgrade-capable-systems-ThinkPad-X/m-p/904805 ).

Re: x220 Card Reader not working on Windows 8.1

Yesterday I did a clean Windows 8.1 install from DVD and haven't installed anything but the minimum Lenovo drivers/packages so far (Lenovo System Update and Lenovo Solution Center). Windows had a notification message that I needed to install a driver for the Ricoh media reader and its link took me to the Lenovo 2.24.18.01 download page - this as X230 not X220 and I saw the 2.25.18.01 version too so installed that instead (if I was going to risk using the X230 one I might as well use the latest). Anyway, I was watching the CPU very carefully and it has been working fine.

Note in case it's relevant - when I installed the driver I didn't have an SD card inserted.

Re: x220 Card Reader not working on Windows 8.1

I also had this problem with the card reader on X220 with Windows 8.1.  The driver that worked for me was http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/ghxb02ww.exehttp://support.lenovo.com/en/downloads/ds034695

I installed it whilst an SD card was in the reader. I had previously removed a non-functioning Ricoh driver so Device Manager was showing 'Base System Device' (I think that was it).

Hope it helps and good luck :)
