x220 device recognition and driver installation for Windows XP

2011-12-11, 17:24 PM

hello all...i'm a newbie and am in a bind

we bought x220's (type 4287 2VU) with windows 7 installed.  Our software application will not run on 7 nor in XP compatibility mode as we found out.  We decided to create a partition and install XP Pro which we were able to do.  XP does not recognize most of the devices like audio, wireless, bluetooth, monitor, LAN, touchpad and more.  I have tried the directions in the Useres Guide but cannot get SP to recognize things to install drivers.  Can someone help me out with what i am missing?

Lenovo is not helping as they will not assist nor support an XP downgrade at this time.  We used a standard XP Pro SP2 CD to install and license and then installed SP3.

I have 3 days to fix things.  THanks in advance.

Hi teletrix, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

Try ThinkVantage System Update 3.15. It will detect what's missing and  let you choose which drivers to install.

Hope this helps, and come back and tell us how it goes!

If you created a partition and did not destroy the original Win 7 partition and have "Dual" boot, boot from window 7 and you can download the driver from: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-77016

The same driver works for both Windows 7 and XP, and from here you can go the support site and download the balance of drivers, otherwise find a friend who will download the driver to fa lash drive for you.  Some libraries will let you do this too.

Thx Jim...I did maintain the windows 7 partition but the machine boots directly to XP...i have downloaded the drivers for all the devices onto a flash and have copied them to the XP partition...the problem seems to be that XP does not recognize the devices as even being installed and running the driver setup (like the wifi driver link you posted) does nothing to remedy this...am I making any sense? I'm not new to this but I sure feel like it right now...look forward to ur thoughts...thx in advance

For XP just running the executable you downloaded from the Lenovo support site just installs the actual SP installtion stuff into the DRIVERS folder.  You then need to eecute the Setup file for the required utility form the appropriate subdirectory in the DRIVERS folder.

DId you do that?

Cheers,

Bill

There are at least 2 ways to solve your problem. First was as mentioned to install XP and dual boot. What you may have missed out is to boot up with window 7 first, navigate to lenovo support using internet explorer, input the model and select XP as the operating system. This would allow you to download the XP version of Lan driver. Save it on the XP partition, reboot into that and then you can install that lan driver to gain internet access.

The second way is that since you have window 7 pro, you can go to download virtual pc from microsoft which is Free of charge, it also allows you to install win xp (free with win 7 pro) so that you can run XP in a virtual mode. Bootup and go to Bios and enable the virtualization so that you can use it for your application.

A third way is to download the free vmware player which allows you to install XP onto a virtual machine and run it. The 2nd and 3rd way has some advantages over the dual boot method.

Thx ideasmith...did the virtual machine install and our program does not work properly under it...thx for the guidance on option 1....I'd like to try and resolve this without reinstalling but if I am against the wall I'll go back and do it

What about the fact that the machine doesn't recognize the individual devices? Does that make sense to you?

Hi teletrix!

Give us all the information you have, even if it doesn't seem relevant.

For instance, how do you know that the machine doesn't recognize individual devices? What's the exact error message you get? What exactly are you doing when you get the message? Exactly which drivers have you tried? In what order?

Post screen shots of anything unusual, for instance what shows in Device Manager?
