x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

Hi all,

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad x220 laptop. BIOS is 8DET69WW version 1.39

With the installed ram (Samsung 4GB 2Rx8 PC3-10600S-09-11-F3) it works like a charm.

I tried an upgrade and bought Samsung 2x 8GB 2Rx8 PC3-12800S-11-11-F3 and installed them, but know the laptop doesn't boot, it makes beeps (one beep, three beeps, one beep) and I can't even start the BIOS.

Just after that I decided to remove these RAM modules, and they where very hot !

Is it possible that the modules are broken ? I understand that the modules probably don't work with this laptop, but why do they become so hot after just a few seconds ?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, regards, staki

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

There are two factors:
- x220 BIOS doesn't support DDR3 1600 memory since the version 1.29. But it works with such memory as DDR3 1333 if the stick is capable to work at lower speed
- M471B1G73BH0-CK0 is DDR3 1600 memory (K0 is a key parameter in the p/n, have a look at the datasheet below)

As result, who knows what's happening exactly in combination of the factors above.

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

Additional information.

Per PSREF, your memory spec is:

8GB max / PC3-10600 1333MHz DDR3, non-parity,
dual-channel capable, two 204-pin SO-DIMM sockets

You have the wrong speed memory(PC3-12800) and your machine will only support 8GB max.

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

Thanks for the answer !

I'm sorry, but I've read everywhere that the x220 does support up to 16 GB memory...

And why the modules become so hot after just a few seconds ? I tried with just one module of 8 GB and it didn't work and was just as hot as with two modules.

These are 1,5 Volts like all the PC3 modules (and the Sandy Bridge CPU does work with 1,5 V memory if I'm not wrong), and even if they don't work properly  because of speed or latency the shouldn't become so hot, don't you think so ?

I have to specify that I bought used modules...and they were sent to me without any antistatic protection...

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

In the PSREF accessories page:

2GB PC3-10600 DDR3 L-H SODIMM 55Y3710 ann 03/02/10
4GB PC3-10600 DDR3 L-H SODIMM 55Y3711

Your spec is low voltage (1.35V). <verifying if this is correct.

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

Hello sclexman,

Do you mean that the two 8 GB Samsung modules are low Voltage ? I thought that all PC3 modules are 1.5 V, and the PC3L are low voltage 1.35 V.

I am wrong ?

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

Lenovo PSREF does not always list DDR3L correctly. It normally states just DDR3.

You have to look the part number up.

Your memory at crucial:

http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/compatible-upgrade-for//thinkpad-x220

[edit: they show 1.35v]

Some memory sticks run 1.5 or 1.35 volts.  Some memory sticks can clock down memory speed.  This does NOT mean it will work on your machine. Normally I go to accessories page, find the OEM shipped part, and find memory matching that spec.

The Samsung spec sheet X220 posted for your part number states DDR3.

You normally have to look on the sticker on the memory part.

DDR3L will show... or PC3L-1600 IF low voltage,

Note:

If your preowned memory is HOT to touch, I would not use it.

Re: x220 doesn't boot after ram upgrade

x220 supports 1.5v memory in accordance to the Sandy Bridge specification. 1.35v modules might not work depending on their features.
"L-H" in the post above means "Low Halogen".

x220 might work with dd3 1600 and even ddr3 1866 modules (at their speed) with BIOS lower than 1.29

New Samsung modules are 1.5v (the spec is above), but most likely are defective.
