x220 i5-2520 & Qualcomm Gobi 2000. Error 1802

[ Editado ]

Hi, guys!

I know this error about unauthorized card is very regular. I know a reason. Nevertheless I need a help.

I've got an x220 laptop with i5-2520m and broadband option installed in it - an official Qualcomm Gobi 2000 HS-USB Modem 9205 (78y1399). WLAN card is also exist. Laptop and Gobi 2000 are from Lenovo and purchased officially. The drivers for modem and boot loader are downloaded from Lenovo's site. All nesessary drivers and patches for Microsoft Windows 7 and Lenovo are installed too.

With initial BIOS v.1.04 the system works fine, with the only one problem - modem isn't presented in Access Connection since the laptop cold starts. So I've to load the default settings in setup every time the laptop cold starts and restart the laptop. I know this error has been fixed in new BIOS.

After the newest BIOS 1.16 was flashed the system halts if I try to access setup (after F1) or after cold start. The error message you know - "1802: Unauthorized network card.... (05c6/9205) . System is halted". Also, as the modem isn't set to default stage it's not visible in Access Connection. In Hardware Manager the modem looks fine and can be tested. I had to downgrade to BIOS 1.04.

The questions are:

1. I know this Qualcomm Gobi 2000 (78y1399) isn't in compatibility list of x220. It's a surprise for me. Why so as both products are from Lenovo and 78y1399 is supported by x201, for example?

2. Why the 78y1399 isn't presented in new BIOSes white list and vise versa in 1.04 is? What's a difference?

3. What I've to do in order to the laptop with new BIOSes could work with Qualcomm Gobi 2000? I know about BIOS patching, but I don't whant to do unofficial actions.

4. Ho to resolve the problem with BIOS reset for modem purpose after cold start?

As this is an official Lenovo forum I expect the serious and useful answer or suggestion.

Sincerely yourth,

Serge

This is a peer to peer support forum provided by Lenovo.  It is NOT an official support channel.  Please refer to the guidelines for the forum.

Regarding RF devices...... ThinkPads need to to through regulatory approval processes for RF emission levels in multiple jurisdictions globally.  New ThinkPads receive regulatory approval in terms of their RF emmision levels based on the current generation set of WiFi/WWAN devices.

It is simply not a practical proposition from a regulatory compliance oint of view to go through the homologation process for previous generations of RF devices.

Cheers,

Bill

Hello,

Probably the simplest thing to do would be to get a 3G cellular modem with is designed to work with the X220.  The Qualcomm Gobi 2000 is an older model, so Lenovo may never have intended to ship the X220 with it.  Another possibility would be to use an external (USB) 3G cellular modem and use that, instead.  The advantage of an external device is that it can be shared between devices which have a free USB port.
