x230 broken key

2012-07-30, 6:25 AM

Hi,

I have two problems:

1. After using my new Thinkpad X230 for a couple of weeks, one of the keys broke and came off from the keyboard (under normal usage). I could clip it back on but it still keeps coming off. Super annoying and it's new!

2. I have a dead pixel (IPS screen) right in the middle of the screen.

Is it possible to solve any of these problems through warranty? Is it worth to call for support?

Thank you for your help.

Re: x230 warranty question

Hello zombyorc,

This sounds like a faulty keyboard if you haven't had it for long. I agree with Justin_1120, that you should probably call the Lenovo service number and get a new keyboard sent to you. This is a customer replaceable part and there shouldn't be a problem getting a new one sent to you.  Also, I doubt that you will lose all your keys, There is a chance that those couple of keys weren't connected correctly.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Update: I've just lost another key! Please note that my typing habits are completely normal and I've never had issues before with any keyboard (I've used a lot).

I'm really disappointed with the quality of the new keyboard.

Hello zombyorc,

For the problem you would have to call into a support site to verify if it is not a Customer Induced Damage and to have the device shipped into do replacement (if still in warranty).

Here is a link for our customer care lines:

Re: x230 warranty question

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.

I noticed that there are different keyboards for the X230 series. Some have blue prints on certain keys and some have only black and white sets. Mine is the latter (model: 2306CTO). Someone posted a similar "boken key" issue in another forum using the same model: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=105163&p=682434#p682434. I'm wondering if there is a connection...

My main concern is that all the keys feel the same on the keyboard (low quality). Does this mean that I'll lose all the keys sooner or later???

Anyway, I''ll try to contact support for a keyboard replacement--my computer is only a few weeks old.

Thanks.

Yes, it's the new island-style keyboard on the X230. The X220 came with the old keyboard.

Why suffer with a broken key when you have a warrantee.  Call Lenovo support and tell then the key is broken.  I wouldn't mention that it has fallen off, just that it does not work when pressed.  Since the keyboard is a CRU part (customer replaceable unit) they will send you a new keyboard at no cost. Replacing the keyboard itself is trivial.
