x260 mSATA

2019-03-25, 6:47 AM

Hello,

I have Lenovo x260. Laptop has storage od common sata ssd.

There is slot for WWAN card, with mSATA connection. Since I dont need WWAN card, I would like to replace it with mSATA storage, but the support of WWAN card is by one screw in the middle end of the card, and all mSATA drives have 2 screws at the each side.

Any solution for this?

mSata drives were supported up to the xx30 generation (e.g. X230, T430), sharing the same Mini-PCI-E slot used for the WWAN.

From the xx40 generation, the Mini-PCI-E slot has been replaced with a M.2 slot, where you could replace the WWAN with a M.2 SSD in many models.

However, the X260 M.2 slot where the WWAN card sits does not support an SSD. While a M.2 SSD will fit the M.2 slot, it won't be usable.

Lexar just released a 2242 NVME drive (NOT SATA) in 120, 240 and 512gb versions! https://www.lexar.com/portfolio_page/ssd-nm520/

These should work in the WWAN PCIe port because NVME is entirely PCIe, rather than SATA over PCIe. The pre-existing 2242 sized PCIe drives were all SATA over PCIe, which required SATA routing built into the PCIe port on the motherboard (which wasn't made available on the X260).

I'm only able to find them on B&H Photo Video: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1454342-REG/lexar_lnm520_256rbna_256gb_internal_ssd_nm520.htm...

The 120gb and 512gb versions are listed as "Special Order", but the 240gb version is back ordered, but at least it's something! I'm debating on if I want to put in an order for the back-ordered 240gb version.

EDIT: I was also able to find them on Amazon, but they show as a pre-order item and show as full list price (whereas B&H has them discounted): https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-NM520-512GB-Solid-State-LNM520-512RBNA/dp/B07NTXH61R/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=Lexar%2BNM520&qid=1554146815&s=electronics&sr=1-1-fkmrnull&th=1

Unfortunately, I have been unable to get the drive to work. I'm left wondering if the rumored WWAN device ID whitelist is the problem, but I'm not too interested in messing with that.

I wish I read this before I ordered that Lexar drive. Physically fits, but its not detected by the system.

I love my x260, but I'm really disappointed in the NVMe "situation". First, only a 2.5" drive was supported, and then when finally a 2242 NVMe SSD came out, it doesnt work.

I'm not too keen on the later models because they drop built in ethernet.
