x270 installing 9.5mm 2.5" HDD instead of 7mm

2019-01-15, 5:50 AM

Hello,

I just got an x270 and want to upgrade the HDD to a large spinning disc. The specifications sheet says the computer takes 7mm thick 2.5" drives.

https://psref.lenovo.com/syspool/Sys/PDF/ThinkPad/ThinkPad%20X270/ThinkPad_X270_Platform_Specifications.pdf

I opened the computer and put a 9.5mm drive in the plastic drive holder and it fits perfectly.

Is there any reason I can't use a 9.5mm drive in this computer?

I was not involved in the engineering of this model so I don't really know, but often the thinner drive is needed to allow airflow for cooling and to avoid shock damage.
