i was having problem with x61 screen freeze. this began to occur after ThinkVantage system update downloaded and installed a mouse/trackpoint driver about a month ago. keyboard/mouse becoime unresponsive and nothing can be done except BRS and turn back on. support said send in as i already had a spare keybaord and that didn't help. didn't have time for that as was traveling.
i also suspected this was a driver conflict problem, and intended to update to windows 7 from xp pro. have upgraded to w7. problem gone. did not allow thinkvantage to install mouse/trackpoint driver.

hey robertsbowers,
curious to know (and if you're willing), if you install the mouse/trackpoint drivers now from our support site will the X61 freeze ?

After spending a month having my X61 freeze up frequently after that update installed, and now free of that malady, no I am not willing to install the mouse/trackpoint update on the same computer. There is an identical TP X61 which did install that update, and I will report if the freeze occurs on that one. If it does, I need to know how to back down the update.
I'm a computer scientist (retired) who spent many years in development and marketing. When problems occur, one of the first things to ask is "what changed?" Particularly related to the problem. The problem began immediately after ThinkVantage downloaded and installed the mouse/trackpoint driver, under XP.
Since I am having no problems after installing W7, and all is working well, why would I want to install the update? Windows Update also searches for related updates, and tried to install it, but I deselected it and hid it.
BTW after installing W7, and preventing ThinkVantage Access from installing, I have much better wireless access without "drops," and faster speeds. I think some of the ThinkVantage programs conflict with elements of Windows. When I first got the TP X61s wireless would not connect consistently until I got rid of Access. No solutions were ever offered except my own solution which got rid of the problem. I did allow Access to install later without problems. But when installing W7 I decided to bypass Access. The other TP X61 is still on XP and experiences frequent wireless drops in an entirely different location.
