192 kHz surround not working properly on X220T

2015-03-28, 6:16 AM

Hello,

Since purchasing my X220T several years ago, I have never been able to output 192 kHz surround sound (5.1, 7.1 channels) via DisplayPort with channels spontaneously mapping to the wrong speaker or not mapping to any speaker at all. For some time, I believed this was a hardware limitation. However, after finding that 192 kHz surround works perfectly in Fedora and other Linux distributions, I have come to realise this is in fact a driver problem.

Recently, Intel released a new driver for HD3000 graphics under Windows and I had hoped that this would finally resolve the issue. However, it did not.

As such, will a driver update for Windows ever be released to fix this issue, or is there a setting that allows me to turn off audio device 'power saving' for the Intel HD Audio device which appears to be causing these issues? I can tell that this is the case since my receiver shows no audio signal when sound isn't playing in Windows whilst under Fedora, my receiver shows that there is an audio signal even when no sound is playing.

Thanks in Advance

William

Some related material is present on MSDN:

https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff536193%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

Those "AddReg" entries are in the inf files in C:\Program Files\CONEXANT\CNXT_AUDIO_HDA.

It appears the Conexant driver for the X220T hasn't been updated in years.

I can confirm this is another case of the "silent stream bug", in this case, over HDMI.

A temporary solution is the "AVR Audio Guard" freeware utility available from http://www.marcsapps.co.uk/ that essentially plays a silent .wav file in the background to stop Windows cutting off the audio stream (and thus causing havoc).

NOW, LENOVO, INTEL AND MICROSOFT, FIX THIS ISSUE THAT HAS EXISTED FOR YEARS!!!
