Audio is impossibly quiet on Helix

2014-06-03, 21:01 PM

Now that I have my Helix booting again, with a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and all the latest drivers, it's time to address the ridiculously quiet audio. I can barely hear it on maximum. I feel like it is a driver issue that cropped up some time ago. Anyone else have this problem?

Don't know why this happened for you, I upgraded mine to v1.23 without a hitch. But the note in the readme states:

  • Note: Do not attach the USB 3.0/2.0 Ethernet Adapter to the computer until the UEFI BIOS update is completed. If you need to attach the USB 3.0/2.0  Ethernet Adapter to the computer during the UEFI BIOS update, the ThinkPad Setup menu items should have the following changes until update is completed.

        - Security
          - Secure Boot
            - Secure Boot                        [Disabled]
        - Startup
          - UEFI/Legacy Boot                     [Both]
          - UEFI/Legacy Boot Priority            [Legacy First]
          - CSM Support                          [Yes]

Does this apply to your setup?

On the volume, while the speakers certainly aren't loud, they are sufficient, but the headphones are splendid. I was fiddling around with the Dolby settings the other day though, and pushing the EQ boost too much results in really bad distortion from the speakers.

And regarding the Dolby Home Theater, the installation package for it is included with the Realtek drivers, as my colleague found out.

Realtek Drivers Win8

So, no dice on getting it to boot again with the BIOS changes?

For the volume, check this thread out. You're probably missing the Dolby enhancement settings.

Yes your boot suggestions worked, I'll mark that as accepted answer. I have no idea why this happened, but it required a clean install. Probably for the better, the laptop was sluggish as ever. Ah yeah I am missing Dolby. Let me grab that thanks.

Hmm, where is the Dolby driver for Thinkpad? I don't see it listed under the full drivers page.

Funny that it isn't listed... but I'm running Realtek driver version 6.0.1.6895 on Win8.1.1 so this here should work:

Dolby Home Theater v4

ThinkStation P620 - 3955WX/64GB // ThinkPad X1E Gen3 - i7-10850H/32GB
ThinkPad P1 - i7-8750H/32GB // ThinkPad P70 - Xeon E3-1505M/64GB
ThinkPad W540 - i7-4800MQ/32GB // ThinkPad W520 - i7-2720QM/32GB

Solved, they really need to include a link to the Dolby supporting stuff under the 8.1 info page, otherwise it's lost on those of us who are on 8.1
