Battery problems on helix

2013-11-17, 13:22 PM

I've read other threads on this, but they've only made things worse.

I booted a couple of days ago and got a message 'battery1: there is an error" with a dead link to Lenovo for a replacement.
The laptop's only a few months old and doesn't get all that much use. The power icon tells me battery 1 is 0%, plugged in, not charging.

Tried uninstalling windows battery drivers, and rebooting, but now neither battery is charging. Installed new dependency settings package and updated everything that has been mentioned on other threads.

Question 1: is there anything else I can try? I'm on a trip so just taking it back to dealer is not an option, at least for the next 2 weeks.

Question 2.: is it possible that battery 1 overheated? I'm in a warm country, but temperatures inside are maybe high 20s celsius, not crazy. The tablet does seem to get very warm though.

Hi mrhardy,

There could be a problem in the settings app when you activate the option to limit the charge of the battery to 50% to increase battery life. this option has been removed at the last update though.

But if you have a red cross on your battery I would think it's likely to a hardware problem.

I don't think the heat is a problem, I use my Helix outdoor all the time and here is more than 40 degrees celsius. The heat will reduce your battery life but i doubt it will destroy it unless you leave your laptop for hours in direct sun.

Vince.

Thanks

Battery two started charging after I let it run down, and seems OK.

Battery one also suddenly worked,  and started charging, but after a day went absent again.

I think you're right that battery 1 is a hardware/connection problem. Back to shop when I get home.

i also see very random behaviour in regards to battery. i see many people find this random behaviour.. some say certain things like uninstaling power manager, or restarting without power pligged in, but this may just be clucthing at straws.. and its a coincidence that it started working. on mine seems to have a mind of its own when it charges, and when it doesnt.  for example this morning was charging, but now says plugged in but not charging.. i see many people are not sure what their battery is doing, and doesnt seem lenovo is coming out and telling its users what is going on.. pretty disapointing.

My #1 battery says "plugged in not charging". Battery #2 is 46% and charging. I've updated the dependency package. Don't know what else to do.

A couple of months ago I had to send it in to have the latch repaired and I wonder if it has charged properly since then.

Run "regedt32.exe" and check

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Lenovo\PWRMGRV\ConfKeys\Data

you will see two SN-like subkeys. Look for ChargeStartPercentage and ChargeStopPercentage DWORD values. They determine when charging starts and stops. The numbers you see are HEX numbers. You need to convert them to DEC numbers.

hmm my start is set to  45

and my stop is set to 50

both batteries on 95% (plugged in not charging)

i think LENOVO have some very #%^#$ logic in their code as to when to charge.. i dont know why companies waste time and money coming up with this type of code, that just frustrates users..  and in additon to making a truthfull statement, so that the users know whats going on.. they just dont say anything..

I called Lenovo customer service and they had me update the bios and my batteries are charging perfectly now. Thanks, Lenovo!

nah another.. hope for the best solution...

i just updated to the latest bios.. restarted..  now one battery is fully charged 100%, and the other is 95% available plugged in, not charging.

this is pretty poor.. and pathetic, where people spend $4000 on a top of the line computer, and the manufacturer cant even be bothered replying or investiagting a problem.. which was mastered on laptops 10 years ago..   i will not be spending my money or the companies money on any more lenovo's..  back to dell i guess

tsandu,

There have been some updates through BIOS, and also a firmware update for the dock.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS035554

Vince was right that we did have a setting to limit charging to 50% and we released a tip on this

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/hints-or-tips/detail.page?DocID=HT078209

The setting was removed via updates to the settings dependency package.

I believe that the tablet charges to 100% before the dock will fully charge by design to ensure if you detach, that you always have the most charge availble (vs leaving some behind in the dock).

What if you run off battery for a bit and see if the 95% drops.  Let it go down to 90% or so, then plug it back in and see if it starts charging.  Don't unplug it again and see if it will charge past 95%.  It may be that we have deliberately set it up this way to prevent the battery from always "topping off" if people plug and unplug frequently.

Thanks

Mark
