Biggest Disappointment- Helix

2013-05-12, 13:02 PM

I just brought the Helix last week. Everything works well expect for the HEAT ISSUE. Basically, I can't use it as a tablet as it generate unacceptable heat. I feel really uncomfortable to hold it even I can feel the heat when I touch the screen.

Helix is not cheaper than suferface. This is my 5th thinkpad and I consider myself as a loyal customer.

I am working in HSBC that also gives me a thinkpad. All in all, if you use helix as a notebook, it is great. However, you can't use it as a touchpad as it is really hot. I am really disappointed and 100% not recommend to my co worker.

P.S There is even no formal email address for me to complaint about this.

I guess you are not lucky. Your unit is likely defective.

If I know Helix is defective, suferface is my preferable choice.

Your unit is defective. Some surfaces had the same problem too if you read the surface forums.

Funnily enough I found mine was getting very hot with the fans going crazy, as soon as I installed TPFanControl though not only did the fans calm down but the machine was 2-5 degrees cooler!

based on a different thread on this forum about over heating, then are you  suggesting that all are unlucky and all are defective defective?

Just check in the Task manager whether SearchFilterHost.exe is eating your CPU power.

My Helix was runing 85 °C during the first day because this process was using up to 40% of my CPU while the fan did not seem to work properly, but after this process finished to index files and returned to normal CPU usages, and after I updated the drivers, now my Helix runs flawlessly at 50-53 °C with fan speed set to 0 (default TPFC Smart settings). I can watch movies, use Photoshop, keep 15+ tabs open in my browser, or write Office documents while the Helix keeps this temperature with fan to 0.

You might want to try letting SearchFilterHost.exe do its job for a few hours (it basically took one day in my case) and update all drivers, including the BIOS since the last version changed the way temperature is managed. Then, when SearchFilterHost.exe has finished eating your CPU (if it was the cause of your Helix's heat), try with and without TPFC.

See this page and subsequent ones for the heat problem I've experienced with the Helix on the first day or real use: http://forum.tabletpcreview.com/lenovo-ibm/56588-thinkpad-helix-user-review-17.html

I still find 50°C is also too much for a handheld Tablet. Still waiting for a real solution from Lenovo. I am realy angry about the Quality Lenovo delivers with that expensiv not realy usable Product.
