Blank screen after applying Vista SP1 on an X61T

2008-05-24, 17:16 PM
Gents,
I installed the Vista SP1 using the Windows Update.

After reboot (SP1 installation), the PC goes to the Windows Boot Screen then the screen goes blank - just black - no HDD activity - nothing. I let it sit there for over an hour before I pushed the power button and rebooted many times.

The only way to get the laptop back running was by using a Vista USB boot disk and restore the sytem.

I have latest drivers installed and I tried even before using the downloaded version of the SP1 without success.

Any help?

Cheers,
GiMi

For what it is worth - I have this same problem on the same computer. I have spent 3hrs with Microsoft support and it came down to reinstallation - problem is Lenovo do not supply any o/s/ disks!

I had this problem when I did the SP1 update through automatic updates.  I had to use Rescue and Recovery to get back.  Since I have vista ultimate and have Chinese and Korean langauge packs installed I figured I should try the all language download update from the microsoft site here.  I let it run and installed without any problems on my X61 Tablet.  I hope this helps you.

Hi Herushan,

I will give one more try. I am already very effective in recovering the system ;)

It doesn't always go wrong... I took the automatic update to SP1 on my X61t, and it worked perfectly. Took a long time, though.

I'm having the same problem. One moment, I'm looking forward to installing SP1 as requested by the Automatic Update, the next I'm staring at a blank screen. Problem is, I can't restore my computer to factory condition: I have very important files that i can't lose. Anybody figured out how to repair this?

What I've gotten going into the settings is that bootmgr is corrupted; if so, how do we fix it if automatic recovery through ThinkVantage can't?

herushan, I got the same problems after installing the SP1 with multilingual support. The only solution I see right now is a clean install.

isantana, you have to press the blue button in order to recover you system or boot from a Vista boot disk and restore it.

Cheers,
GiMi.

GiMi,

Thanks for the info. I called both Microsoft and Lenovo yesterday morning, and after hours of useless ramblings by a Microsoft employee and only minutes of truth from the Lenovo employee, Lenovo tech support told me honestly that my only hope was to restore the PC and perhaps recover my files via the ThinkVantage button.

I can't believe the ignorance of Microsoft on this. I mean, we can't just recover our PC's at will because of the complete disregard of the SP1 tech team of Microsoft. This is ridiculous; if any other company had done this, they'd surely meet their end for providing not only a defective product, but also automatically downloading and installing it without checking to see if it worked first.

Well, good luck with your systems, because the way things are going at the moment, if the computer is just waiting to restart for the installation of SP1, don't turn off the computer. If the inevitable has happened already, I hope not all is lost.

Cheers,

isantana21,

If it makes you feel any better...I had to do a complete refresh of vista AFTER SUCCESSFULLY installing SP1.  It installed fine, but made my home network vanish. I spent 6.5 hours with microsoft folks and they still were no closer to solving the problem.  In fact they uninstalled so many things and turned off so many services that I ended up just having to reinstall the OS from scratch.   However, after I did, SP1 installed without any issues.  So, I guess it's cold comfort, but it seems like problems with SP1 can happen with or without installation success.

isantana21,

Take it easy. I do not see why your last solution is to reinstall your system? First time i lost almost one day because nothing worked. No external DVD, no bootable USB... First I purchased a 4Gb USB stick and I made it bootable. Than I booted from it and with some command lines I managed to restore the system to a previous state. I am quite sure you can do it too.

In the meantime I restored my system after the failure of SP1 more than 5 times. I always hopped the new drivers will correct the problem, but...

Let me know what doesn't work for you and I might know how to lead you to recover your laptop.

As my general conclusion, I am not that happy with Lenovo like I was with IBM. Something is missing and the quality is not the same.

Cheers,
GiMi.
