Downgrading to XP

2008-01-12, 17:41 PM
Hi
Would you guys/gals recommend downgrading to XP.
I got the Downgrade XP CDs from Lenovo.
Second question: do you need the Docking station in order to Do the install.  Can I use an External CD/DVD ROM.
One before I tried upgrading the HD drivers but it would not let me.  It seems that Lenovo has locked the Bios somehow so it only can recognize Lenovo's Dock (Just a suspesion).
Thanks

See also this post in the X Series forum.
Don't know about needing the dock, but since your TP does not have a built-in optical drive, I guess it is a requirement.
Does anyone buy one of these machines WITHOUT the dock? I guess not...

Well I don't see a need for the docking station... Other than the optical drive which I has two of; everything else is worthless; or better say, I can live without.

Can you boot from that external CD-drive? If so, you can go ahead.
You may need to set the Hard disk in BIOS from SATA to Compatibility Mode.

Well as I said before, I think Lenovo has somehow blocked the Bios, so you can only boot from a Lenovo docking station.  I have not tried that yet (rebooting using the drive).
The most important question is SHOULD I DO IT.  Would you guys recommend going back to XP.  That is the major decision.

My personal advice? OUT with Vista, IN with XP.
If you can connect the hard disk to a PC, take an image first, so you can always restore it.
For other external drives, see this posting. Apparently a dock is not a must-have.

This is not the case, you need to change the boot order in BIOS. (Press F1 when starting).
I use an external Freecon DVD-RW externaly for diagnosis, pcdoc from cd etc.

I downgraded to WinXP my X60 Tablet using an external USB DVD drive (not the dock) and it worked without a problem....

It will reformat your HD and replace the service partition with the WinXP source and software.
Very easy!
