First Helix impressions, screen issues

2013-05-16, 5:16 AM

My chief complaint at this point is that the left half of the screen seems to have different color than the right. For instance, if the entire screen is white, the rightmost part is bright and consistent white, while the left half becomes a very dim off white beige. I find that text is harder to read on the left side than the right as a result.

Question to others, have you noticed this, and if so to what degree? Is this worthy of requesting a replacement? Or am I being picky? I had thought IPS displays fixed these kinds of problems.

IPS display (panel) technology is the matrice only, the issue you are facing is (crappy) uneven LED backlight behind the IPS matrice. That's why professional monitors still use CCFL backlight. I would definitely asked for replacement considering the Helix price tag. On the other hand the replacement one could be even worse or a have different more annoying issue.

Thanks Puppy (weird irony in you replying to me, Red Puppy), but alas. So question remains. Should I play warranyt roulette and demand a fix, or am I just as likely to receive a worse screen in the replacement? My wife didn't notice it until I pointed it out, but once I alerted her she could spot it. I can't say it drives me crazy, but it bugs me a little when there's a large amount of white surface on the screen, such as during drawing sessions with a white canvas, or word processing.

Hehe, two puppies ;-) I understand the dilemma, I'm very picky on screen quality. Do you know someone else owning Helix as well ? You could compare the screen if there is similar quality issue first. Notebook screens can not par on a professional desktop monitor quality especially the backlight uniformity that is not compensated.

Unfortunately I don't know any other owners. The problem is this device is very rare. I haven't seen any other complaints yet about it, but it's subtle, not everyone will catch it. And also with a new device, I can be very scrutinous. I have read one complaint on here about backlight bleed, and with an all dark screen, there is some spots of bleed at the bottom edge. It's not really noticeable once the screen is lit, and I suppose you'd only really see it in a game or movie that has a dark scene.

My outgoing X201 had mega inconsistencies fromt top to bottom. I wonder do the Retina screens from Apple have these issues? Not that I'm cross shopping.

I don't think that any current IPS/PLS notebook display including Retina one will have overall better backlight uniformity quality than others. It is impossible with LED backlight technology. It is just matter or having bad luck.
