Fix my problem = I paypal you $10... Remap pen (stylus) button to erase

2008-05-12, 19:33 PM
I had an x41 tablet and *LOVED* using the side button as an eraser.  The x61t has 'innovated' this feature away, which I find quite annoying.  In fact, I now rarely use the pen because I hate fumbling with it every time I need to erase.  Please make my tablet fun again...  :smileyhappy:

Here's what I've tried so far:

I installed Wacom drivers, which did allow me to map the pen button to erase, but those disable the touchscreen.  Upon reinstalling the touch drivers, all seemed to work correctly.  Nonetheless, within a couple of hours the pen would either stop working altogether and/or random ink streaks would occur when using the stylus.  I have since returned everything to original drivers.

I'm kind of surprised others haven't been raising a poo storm about this, especially given the number of x41 users likely to have upgraded by now.

BTW: Tim_Lenovo: Can you inform power users of a way to provide quality feedback and suggestions to Lenovo software folks?  Tech support likes to bounce my calls all over the world, when all I usually want to do is offer a suggestion for improvement.  Is there an communication outlet for this?

Are you aware that you can delete text by just scratching it out?  I had the same complaint until I got into the habit of scratching out text.

uh...yeah.  Scratch-out doesn't work well if you have precise elements you want to erase.

Maybe because I never had the older style tablet, but I find flipping the pen over to erase quite handy.   It took a while to figure out how to efficiently use the pen features including the button on the pen and how to quickly flip the pen for the eraser, but much better than having the old T42 Thinkpad.

As a side note to your comments on Tech Support, my first call to Lenovo was to someone who was struggling with the English language.  I can easily deal with this, because I work with many developers from many parts of the world but others may not find this as easy.    Their ability to look at different solutions to my battery issue was also limited, recommending that I take it to a service center for resolution.
Full disclosure: Not a Lenovo employee, just someone with a X61 running Win XP SP2

I don't, but if you do, I'm happy for you.  However, just wait until you accidentally drop it and the pen dies.  (replacement cost... 50 bucks.)

I just want to remap the button.  Lenovo, please FIX THIS.

Well, I just tried to customize the button as you mentioned.

Now, I could erase by holding the button, then a cursor changes to eraser so you don't have to flip over to erase. If this is what you want. You could just go to change in Tablet properties in control panel by changing from Tablet PC defined to erase. That's it. However, I use Bamboo driver from Wacom directly. I don't remember really whether a stock (Lenovo) driver has this.

If you have any question, just ask. I'll try my best to help.

note: the reason why I have to use another driver is using pressure sensitivity in Photoshop.

Is it the NEW Bamboo driver?  I just installed the new release candidate driver a few days ago. Actually, the Bamboo fun driver. According to Wacom, the update is supposed to address the possibility of conflicting pen drivers.  I don't have any problems so far...  In fact, I actually used my pen yesterday--and it didn't even pi$$ me off!!  I'll keep checking back...

(For the record, I had tried older bamboo drivers, as well as another wacom driver suggested by an sxga+ owner.  I had the same problems with both.)

Hopefully this works!!!:smileyvery-happy:

For me, I use pretty old driver (505), at least older than user's one; this one works perfectly for me, including touch (with multitouch driver). I haven't tried any newer one though. I will give it a shot and let you know later.

:smileyhappy: good to see people get this work.
