Re: Helix - Two external displays + laptop display

2013-08-22, 15:56 PM

Any suggestions as to a good 'matching' external display resolution?  I currently am using a 1600x900 diplay that matched well with my T-500.  Now, moving a window from the 11.6 inch Helix display to the external means I go from tiny type to large kindergarten letters.  I like it a little bigger, but the difference is too much.

I have a general idea it needs to be 30-40% higher rez, and I suppose I could just do the math, but I would appreciate your input.

And no, I don't want to use non-native resolution on the external.

Re: Helix - Two external displays + laptop display

2013-08-26, 11:32 AM

My personal experience to share with combination of 2 external monitors Samsung S27C450 and Samsung SMT27A550 connected to:

Thinkpad USB 3.0 Dock

  • permanent CPU usage between 3 and 25%, even mouse movement causes DisplayLinkManager application in task manager to jump to 10% utilization
  • Copying files or downloading files causes DisplayLinkManager utilization to jump to 25-30% of CPU and in that case the system becomes unusable, mouse moves slow, with delay or freezes frequently, typing the same experience.
  • When copying or downloading the files, not possible to work with virtual machine - I have one with 1.5 GB RAM, the CPU utilization inside the VM raises to 100%, frequently the whole VM freezes for several seconds
  • CPU temperature constant over 64°C/147°F in idle mode, when doing something constant raises over 72°C/161°F.

Matrox TripleHead2Go DisplayPort Edition

  • Does not affect CPU usage at all
  • CPU temperature constant around 50°C/122°F in idle mode, 60-65°C/140-149°F doing regular work, had to run benchmarks like Intel XTU to raise the temperature to max of 75°C/165°F - btw, it seems that the BIOS 1.14 limits the temperature to 75°C/165°F, Intel XTU benchmarks shows throttling from that point and ThrottleStop 5.0 does not show any effect aka cannot overcome throttling.
  • No lags, no delays, no issues with copying/downloading files or working with virtual machines.
  • BUT, the screens shows irregularly flickers and are going off and on - have tested any combination of single and both monitors attached to Matrox TripleHead2Go and cables; basically it is not possible to work, have raised the support case and waiting for reaction now. To be cleared, before purchasing have tested the system with Matrox own system compatibility tool (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/support/compatibility/gxm/home/) and the test was positive
  • Positioning the Helix screen between the two external monitors doesn't work very well - you have constantly to take care to move the mouse cursor down (in my setup) in order to get to Helix screen. Due to Matrox TripleHead2Go technology, you will have to position either on the beginning or on the end of the row line with the external monitors in order to get the smooth access to any screen.

Conclusion - no one of the external solutions works satisfactory and I cannot get the recommendation to any of that in the moment because the serious work with Helix and two external monitors is not possible. I am sure it is not hardware but device drivers issues - as long the drivers are not corrected, refrain from purchase.

[UPDATE]

  • Did anybody try the Lenovo DisplayPort to Dual-DisplayPort Adapter? I strongly suspect one will not work, Intel HD4000 supports only DisplayLink 1.1 and the mentioned adapter would work only with 1.2 specs.
  • TripleHead2Go works - currently the only problem is the usage of USB to LAN converter which somehow interfere with the TripleHead2Go adapter - without the USB to LAN adapter no issues, with the USB to LAN adapter irregular dot or line based screen flashes (like if somebody would start the drilling machine very close to this HW) and irregular screen goings off (black) and back. The described situation occurs both with USB to LAN adapter and USB 3.0 dock with only LAN attached to it. At this moment, have to use only WLAN and my provider just increased the bandwidth to 250 Mbit download / 50 Mbit upload :smileysad:.

Displayport MST hubs should work with 1.1, the issue is that 1.2 recognises two monitors and treats them individually, while 1.1 will stretch out one massive monitor between them. The main problem here being full screen video will centre between the two monitors.

Re: Helix - Two external displays + laptop display

Im using the matrox dualhead2go and I'm running two 24 inch monitors at a resolution of 3840 x 1200.  I have the helix on the left of my setup running at 1920 x 1080.

I would like to run 3 24 inch monitors using TripleHead2Go.  Have you tried with 3 monitors and if so what's the max resolution your getting?

Cheers

@stevenwoohoo, the triplehead2go won't support 3 x 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 monitors. The max resolution for 3 monitor configuration was 3 x 1280x1040.

Thanks Jin Li - shame though!  Do you know of any other way of running 3 24 inch monitors at a high resolution on the Helix?

something like a displayport splitter supporting 2 x 24 LCD, then connect the third LCD using a USB2DVI or USB2HDMI converter.
