Helix front facing camera problems.

2013-04-24, 15:40 PM

I recieved my frist batch of Helix's last week.  We ordered 7

Out of the 7, 2 have bad front facing camera's.  I noticed that Lenovo has a new camera driver as part of the Lenovo system update utility.  This driver update doesn't correct the issue.

My vendor is swaping me out with new units but I wanted to post this.

When you get your helix check the front facing camera.

Maybe I'm just unlucky with 2 bad out of 7 or maybe Lenovo has a quality control issue?

@dkNigs and mrlakeside,

This grey picture with the Crossed Camera is the privacy mode of the "Lenovo Settings App". You have to deactivate it in the Settings App under the "Camera" tab.

Re: Helix front facing camera problems.

So I had this problem on 5 out of 6 of my Helix's

So when you are removing all of the bloatware that comes as apart of the default install  it is possible for the front facing camera to lose connectivity.  The green light on the front facing camera comes on but all you get is a grey picture.  Depending on what version of the camera driver you are running this will be a completely grey screen or a grey screen with a camera with a line thought it.      You can tell that it is trying but no picture.

So here's the fix.

Lenovo has the Thinkvantage Communiction Utility.    Google  document id   DS028673

This utility will install and setup an icon in control panel called "Lenovo - Web Conferencing."

Inside this utility  scroll down to the very bottom and select " Advanced camera settings"

Here click the "default" button and this will default the camera back and it will work.. It did for me.

So problem solved.

I have another problem with the front-facing camera:

The green indicator light is visible in the video...

So for Skype calls people will ask me "what's that green light at the side?"

The area is about 10% of the video on the left side of a Helix (3702)

My Helix front cam seems to of stopped working, when trying to use it in the Windows 8 camera app I just get a picture of a camera with a cross through it, however it works for the rear camera.

Does anyone know where there might be some settings to play with to get it working? Really hoping it's not a warranty issue.

Excellent thankyou! That fixed it. It must of defaulted to private when I updated the app, as it was originally working.

My IT client team had the same issue and one of our guys discovered an "Integrated Camera" by SunplusIT. When he uninstalled it, the camera instantly worked without reboot. We tried everything else to no avail. FYI this works on 8.1 Preview.

Just an FYI for some folks out there.  Lenovo Settings is an app you must install from the windows store.  And thanks very much for the solution.  Our company ordered 10 and 3 came with this setting turned on.  I don't know why some have it on and others don't.  Much Thanks!!
