Helix wireless connection issues

2013-09-16, 13:48 PM

We have been using Lenovo tablets for quite a while now, most recently the X230T.  However, we have just moved to the Helix and are having wireless connectivity issues that we never had with the X230T or the X220T.  In a couple of locations, the connection drops entirely even though other models work perfectly.  The strange thing is that the wireless card is the same (Intel Centrino 6205N) in both the X230T and the Helix, yet the Helix connection drops.  I have updated to the latest Lenovo and Intel drivers and made sure all the wireless settings are identical and am still having problems.

Could this be a built-in antenna issue with the Helix?

Thanks,

Jason

Did you enable N connectivity in the wireless driver settings (in the Advance tab)? It's (not sure why) disabled by default.

Yes, n mode is enabled.

We're using the 5.2Ghz channel and it is set as the preferred band.  The channel width for band 5.2 is set to auto as well.

I also wanted to add that the wireless connection seems to work fine with a Helix running Windows 7 as well as an X230T running Windows 8.  It seems to be a specific issue with the Helix running Windows 8.

Was having all kinds of issues connecting to wireless netoworks after upgrading to Windows 8.1. Couldnt get a stable connection unless I rebooted the machine.

I went to the Centrino Properties and under advanced settings changed "802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4" from "20 Mhz" to "Auto" and presto...everything seems to be working now. Will let you know how long this holds up.

I've tried everything. Still no fix.

Any response from Lenovo?

If you google Intel Centrino Advanced N6205 issues Windows 8.1 you will find a lot of forum posts with similar issues. This wireless card appears to be fundamentally incompatible with Windows 8.1.

Intel haven't released a single updated driver for it since Windows 8.1 was launched in October!

I was excited by the wireless update that appeared in the Lenovo updater tool this week which appears to have a new driver dated December within, but I can't get it to install, the old driver keeps appearing.

Not only have Lenovo left us to rot with a premium device, but they've blacklisted any other wireless card being installed in the BIOS.

About the only improvement I've seen since Windows 8.1 is this weeks BIOS update, which has made resetting the card quicker. It still hangs connection constantly though.

That driverset still installs the drivers from September for the Helix however. The newer drivers are only for higher cards. There is no updated driver post Windows 8.1.

it's been about 2.5 months and still haven't had an issue after the settings change (see above).
