Re: How hot does your Helix get under heavy load?

One thing to keep in mind, the i7 model throttles itself when its undocked from the keyboard and doesn't have access to the extra fans. I think it's basically i5 mode with a max power of 9 watts (vs. 17 watts max when docked to the keyboard). In "stand mode" it maxes out at 13 watts, due to how the fans line up when you flip the screen.

The max temperature for the i7-3667U is 105 degrees C (which is pretty hot!) at 17W, so 85C is well within the design parameters of the chip itself, and probably is OK for the componenets surrounding it.

Based on quick research, it seems like RMClock is no longer an option since it hasn't been updated in ages.

I'm thinking of getting a small fan to blow at the portion of the screen that gets hot.

I also discovered that. Just today though, I noticed that the bulit in windows power management has a section dedicated to limiting the CPU. I'll trim it down and report back if I notice a difference. This could be exactly what we need. Change the power mode to high performance when needed but make the power saver mode throttle for heat & battery control.

Let's hope it does what one would think it should!

All,

Great discussion - appreciate you bringing this up and including some of the specific applications and temps you are seeing when pushing the system.   Could you all share a bit more to help create a more complete picture of how your system operates in different modes?

1) From a cold start up, if you run the same application in tablet mode, or in laptop mode, what kind of differences do you see in temps?  Is there any observed difference between laptop mode and having the system flipped around?

2) Confirming whether you have i5 or i7 models would be helpful too... some of you have mentioned already.

3) What kind of temps are you seeing with more conventional tasks like browsing the web, or working on word doccument, etc?

4) Any difference when plugged in or not?

Thanks

Mark

Here's an idea:

How about all of you run Intel Burn Test and HWMonitor on your Helix?

You can also run CPU-Z to see if throttling occurs.

Intel Burn Test would basically load your CPU to 100% so you would see how hot the CPU really gets.

HWMonitor : http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html

Intel Burn Test : http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/intelburntest.html

CPU-Z : http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

I've see mine hit around 85c while doing the Windows performance test.  It's scary... I don't need to see how much hotter it can go..

I usually have mine in tablet plus mode on my desk.  I put a small cap between the back of the screen and the keyboard so the hot area isn't touching the keyboard and has room to air out.  The air flap is also lifted up so it's open.

I typically get low 50c while browsing, though if stream flash video it will go to 60c.  It hits 70c once in a while.

FYI the BIOS update isn't showing up in the Lenovo System Update utility (although there are updaes for the WiFi drivers, Integrated camera and Settings Dependancy Package).

Hi jeffreytz,

The BIOS was officially released 2 days, it will take a bit of time before it is pushed through as a package to the System update Utility. At this Point I highly recommend you download the BIOS manually from the link I posted above.

hope this helps.
