profsaid,

Not sure TPFan control will work on all the newer systems.   Not Lenovo supported.

The embedded controller in the system (updated through BIOS) should be able to affect fan operation, and recent BIOS changes should update power and thermal management.

What version of BIOS are you now running?

Do you notice it being warm as a detached slate, in the trasitional laptop mode, or when docked and folded down in convertible tablet mode?

Mark

Dear Mark,

Thanks for getting back; I've already installed TPFC to be able to track the temperature on the Helix, but I've set it to BIOS mode (i.e. the BIOS controls the fan speed)..

I've noticed the heat in both modes Tablet & Tablet++ modes... I still haven't tracked how high the temp gets in both modes using TPFC... once I test it I'll let you know the figures I get in each mode.

Is there a built in Lenovo software that could monitor the temperatures & log them or at least display them live as TPFC?

P.S. I've also tried Intel Extreme Tuning to test the CPU & it passed all tests.

Hi Mark,

Really appreciate your involvement.  Will there be an official bios upgrade or do we need to use the link you sent?

davidtlong,

This is the official download link from our support site for the latest and current BIOS

It is the same as nine shared in the thread earlier.

If someone here in the US has applied the new BIOS and is experiencing abnormally high system temps or abnormal fan operation with this BIOS, I'll like to see if we can have a look at your system.

Please send me a PM.

Thanks!

Mark

I have a brand new helix out of the box.  The right side of the screen is excessively warm in the docking station.  It is localized to the right of the camera. I downloaded the new bios.  I still have the heat issue

Re: How hot does your Helix get under heavy load?

It will be hot under normal conditions (if you do not run it in downclocked / reduced voltage mode). There is a full i5/i7 CPU inside, a couple of milimeters under the cover. It produces heat. Lenovo is not able to do magic tricks, the heat has to go somewhere. And it is perfectly normal for this kind of CPU to be around 60C under some load. Please take into account, that in normal desktop PC's the CPU radiator is sometimes heavier than the whole Helix! When it's docked, what do you care what the temperature is as long as it doesn't melt.

There is marketing, and there is reality... I'm still very happy with the Helix and I think it's a super machine.

Try to use TPFanControl to make the fans kick in later than in the BIOS settings. Using the default "Smart" settings it will not start the fans below 60C CPU temperature, which means that under normal work conditions and ambient temperature (below ~25C) the Helix will be perfectly silent most of the time.

My Helix works at around 62~71 celsius without any external displays.

When I plug in the USB 3.0 Dock widh two DVI output, the machine heats up to 71~73 celsius.

And in this configuration the graphics seems to get some serious speeddown or something like that. MS Word 2013 becomes EXTREMELY SLOW to use. You type something, the letters come up after a second or so, making it unusable.

Strangely, other office components still seem to work fine, like Outlook or Powerpoint.

I have latest updates and firmwares and drivers for all my hardwares and software.

W540(Sold), Helix(Sold), Tablet 2(Sold), Tablet 10, X120e(Sold), X201 Tablet, X41 Tablet(Sold), X41, S30*4, X32*4, 701C*4
You could throw around your ThinkPad because it won't break.
You can still throw around your ThinkPad because it will break anyway even if you treasure it.

houndkor, if you didn't need 2 external monitors, I'd suggest just using displayport on the Helix keyboard dock.

I also used the USB dock before and also noticed the same heat levels (60-70c).  It seems the usb dock application uses a good amount of cpu power (3-25%) to drive it.  I only used 1 external display (24" 1920x1200) and ethernet.

Even using the USB dock ethernet to transfer file caused the cpu usage to go up.

I returned the USB dock, and now just use the displayport and separate usb3 ethernet adapter.  Much better and Helix is around 50f.
