Jumpy Thinkpad X220 Tablet Touchpad

2011-07-04, 17:44 PM

Hi, all:

I found the touchpad, when the computer is plugged in to an outlet and battery is at 100%, jumpy and it misclicks often.

This can be repeatedly demostrated by holding a finger in the middle of the touchpad; while doing so for 3-10 seconds, the mouse cursor would jump around by itself. Note that the issue exists on other regions of the touchpad as well but is less obvious.

My best guess is that this is a hardware voltage related issue as 1. my finger feels the increase in current from the trackpad; 2. the issue is completely gone when the computer is on battery; 3. reinstalling the driver doesn't help; and 4. it has been reported that the touchpad is jumpy when plugged in with a 90w adapter:

http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/90w-adapter-leads-to-unusable-jumpy-touchpad/td-p/436833/page/5

The system (Product ID: 4294CTO) is competely new (that is, I have received it last Thursday). It has a Core i7 processor, a 65W adapter, one 4GB RAM, and multitouch screen input. The operating system is windows 7 64bit and the power profile was set to "Maximum Performance".

Both drivers for the touchpad, UltraNav (15.3.6.0) and Synaptics Pointing Device Driver (15.2.20.0) were installed independently (uninstall and install) and tested. The sensitivity of the touchpad was set to the default value (second step of the sensitivity slider from left).

This issue renders the computer unusable. For instance, the touchpad would uninvitedly and randomly left click on google calendar. I am afraid I have to return the system if there isn't a fix to it.

I would like to hear from you to see if I am the only one who is having this problem and I suggest we get the attention of Lenovo if this issue is a common one.

Best regards,

Yang

I just noticed another issue with the touchpad, but I am not sure if it is related.

The touchpad loses sensitivity for 1 second after clicking on the physical mouse button.

Hi,

Don't hold me to it but it might have something to do with the 65w adapter and your power settings on maximum performance.  Try lowering your performance settings and see if it works okay.  Does it work okay on battery alone?

I too have been noticing a lack of sensitivity with the Touchpad. I haven't observed any behavior but I notice the unresponsiveness after I awaken the laptop from standby.  Rebooting it usually resolves the sensitivity issue  but that's not what I consider an optimal solution.  Hope this is just a simple driver issue.

gazurtoid,

When a computer comes out of sleep or hibernation the power manager resets the timers for the hardware as far as sleep timers and light dimmers and your screensaver.  See if it does the same if you set the power settings the same for a/c as well as battery.

Does it do the same thing on a/c as well as battery?

Actually I'm not sure what causes my touchpad to become slow to respond.   I can't narrow it down as to what could be the cause and power settings for either a/c or battery doesn't seem to affect it.

Are your issues similiar to this thread.  If so, check the end of the thread, there seems to be a solution.
