Re: PATA or SATA for X41 T

2009-05-05, 6:30 AM
Well this is getting interesting... I was under the assumption that the Ultrabay Slim hard drive adapter, be it PATA or SATA, has the same type of connector as shown here:

http://www.kawakami-ca.com/images/ultrabay_slim_connector.jpg

In which case, wouldn't the (presumed) SATA-to-PATA bridge inside the Ultrabay adapter make it "look" like a PATA device to the system? I guess I'm going to have to spend some $$$ and order one off of eBay and find out myself. I have an X41t and dock and was going to use my existing Ultrabay Slim HD adapter (PATA) to backup the existing drive.

I couldn't access the thinkwiki site but looking at the cache page in Google, it appears that the unsupported use is to cut off a piece at the back of the adapter so it fits into the T4x systems.

Re: PATA or SATA for X41 T

Hi Ray,  Multiple conversations, but you're right, this is getting interesting.  Every time I think I've dug up the definitive answer, something or someone causes me to reconsider.  Unfortunately, the thinkwiki site has been down for a couple of days & the only cached pages I can access are tantaliingly vague.

FWIW, my current thinking is as follows:  The X41T drive controllers are IDE (PATA) & so any new UltraBay drives would need to be PATA despite the fact that there is a SATA ICH Bridge which necessitates a complicated PATA to SATA converter for the internal HDD.  On the other hand, quite a large number of people have insisted that a SATA HDD in the UltrBay will be "read" by the system as PATA due to the conversion in the caddy itself.  I have a SATA caddy for my T61P & while the DVD drives are interchangeable the HDD caddy won't fit in the X4 dock b/c of the protruding tab (which, as I use it in the T61P, I'm unwilling to snap off).

As I said elesewhere, I just changed my caddy order from SATA to PATA but I will probably await the reults of your trial before buying a new PATA drive to go in it.  Please keep us posted!

There's an interesting thread at forum.thinkpads.com which may be worth reading, found here. It's about the same question regarding the bay in a T43.

Important to note is that the T43 has P-ATA drives with an P-ATA/S-ATA bridge which the X41, to my knowledge, doesn't have.

You will see in the first post on page two jayober threw caution to the wall and won.

Thanks for the link Andy.  I actually read through it already & noticed with interest the suggestion about cutting the tab off a T60 UltraBay caddy (as I have one for my T61P) but the internal differences between the two machines (which you mention) makes it unclear whether the results will be the same for an X41T & the X4 dock.

Thinkwiki is back up & the two links that relate to PATA & SATA hard drive adapters are these:

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ultrabay_Slim_HDD_Adapter

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Ultrabay_Slim_SATA_HDD_Adapter

The gist, according to my read, is that the OEM is PATA but a SATA adpter *might* work "because the adapter actually bridges the SATA HDD to PATA as those older machines have no SATA support."  However, it hasn't been verified that it will work on an X41T/X4 combo yet.  So Ray, we await the results of your test!

I've received notices that both the SATA Ultrabay Slim HD adapter has shipped (from China) and the SATA HD (from North Carolina). When I get them, I'll post back here (and on TPF) the results.

Good news: the SATA HD adapter that I bought off of eBay works fine in both my X4 dock and a T41:

Ray,  Many thanks for running this experiment for us - & for documenting the process so carefully!  An answer is finally found & a positive one at that.  Just ordered a SAT caddy!

Mucho gracias!
