Phantom touches when holding the Helix by the corner

2013-05-19, 4:55 AM

My Helix seems to register phantom touches when holding it by the corner(Like when you hold the upper side with your thumb and use the other fingers to support the lower body).

The device registers phantom touches around the left center of the screen, when I'm holding the device like this arond the lower right corner.

I know it's not the wisest way to hold a tablet, but this does happen quite frequently during the normal usage of the tablet, and I'm quite annoyed about this.

In addition, my devices seems to register phantom touches when it's docked and is not fully opened.

I think the flex caused by the force applied to the chassis is the primary cause for this. Are any of you sharing the same experience with me? Or is it just me?

Yes, I get phantom touches, too.  It's the same spot every time.  For no reason, it just thinks I'm touching it.  I caught it on video.  If this continies, I'll need to trade it in for a replacement.

Mine got terribly bad during the last couple days, and this morning, I finally had to turn it in to the service center.(yesterday, I actually had to turn off the touchscreen to be able to use it at least as a laptop)

Definitely not a good thing to happen to a 4-days old device.

That was 3 hours ago,

And I just called them and they think it's normal.

they said they had no problem with the touchscreen and are running the test program, which will obviously turn out to be normal, because obviously the problem is about chassis flex and has nothing to do with things that can be detected with the software.

I have the same issue. I also sometimes get a "screen press" at the center of the screen (as if someone was pressing the screen with a finger there).  I don't want to send the laptop for service 10 days after getting it!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Actually I managed to get the replacement. luckily, the new machine seems to have no problem(for now)

I think the cause of the problem of my previous machine was because of the chassis flex. maybe there could be some mis-engineering, or something...

All,

Lenovo released a firmware update for the LCD digitizer in October 2013 which should address these issues.

Please visit our support this page on our support site to download and install the fix.  Please follow the instructions carefully and do not power off until complete.

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=DS037644

This update has been introduced in new manufacturing a while ago, so newer systems should be up to date and should not experience these symptoms.

Best regards,

Mark

Re: Phantom touches when holding the Helix by the corner

Hi, Mark:

My helix is having this phantom touch problem recently. The symptom is that touches are shown in straight line in very hign frequency on the right side of the panel, from top to bottom about one inches from the right edge. It happens once for a while and very annoying.

I just updated my windows to 8.1 pro recently. I don't know if this is the reason, I did not find this problem before, but I did not use the helix very often either.

I tried to install  the patch you suggested in your post, but it gave me a message as either the update is not neccessary or is not applicable. Just wondering maybe the patch is not applicable to windows 8.1? If it is, could you update the patch so it can be used on window 8.1? I hope this problem can be fixed without having to send the helix back to lenovo for service.

Thanks,

Yang
