Photo or tips for inside of Helix screen/tablet needing repair

2014-11-02, 17:19 PM

I'm out of town and due to loss of feeling in my arm(having C3-C5 disectomy in two weeks) my Helix took a fall. The screen part snapped open and 2 of the three micro ribbon cables were pulled out. I've actually managed to learn how to reconnect the ribbons but still haven't gotten it back to a operating mode. One time I was able to reset and could boot up and see the display on a secondary monitor. Everything worked great except the primary display.

I don't soppose anyone has a clear photo, not an illustration which is available here, of the board showing how the ribbons are attached? The gold & white with blue tip slide in with connections down. The one that says LCD MB slides in with gold connections up. I can clamp down ok on all of them. The other end of the LCD ribbon also slides into a gold connector on the board which appears ok. It has openings on the end that the ribbon connector slides into. It doesn't slide under  black clip like the others.

Or does someone have experience to give advise. If I wasn't already in Redmond for a summit I would send it in to be repaired but I really need it. At this stage, when I dock it and reboot the Thinkpad red light turns on steady but it beeps twice and I no longer get a signal out the mini HDMI port and have no screen.

Any advise is welcome and I won't place blame for bad advise. Anyone from Lenovo, yea I know it should be handle by a tech which will happen once I get home.

Thanks,

Hi Bill,

As you know, I'm not a hardware person, but I'll send out an SOS to some of the other volunteers to see if we can get a photo for you.

Actually, someone else had already gone for help before I did. We don't overlook much around here. :)  Stay tuned....

The hardest part for you will be to pry it open again. I used a plastic ruler to pry it open. It is easier if you start prying near the digitizer pen and then continue clockwise.

Be careful with the sockets. Make sure not to damage them, or you could end up paying for a whole new motherboard or LCD.

If you need a picture in addition to the video topmahof posted, I can try to open mine again to take a picture for you.

Kind regards,

Thanks Jonas… actually I've become good at popping it open without any damage. I've become good at putting the micro-ribbon cables (or whatever they are called) in and out. I'm more likely to mess up one of the cables than the socket. I could replace a cable cheap enough but no guarantee it will solve the problem. I wondered if I fried something else like a fuse but I still get power and two beeps which I'm sure means something compared to three beeps.

I really wanted to confirm is the positions of the cables but I don't want you to risk breaking one of your plastic clips. Hoping to find someone who have taken it apart often enough or if there is a document with photos out there. I’m really starting to miss my Helix.

Thanks,

Bill

There's the HMM (hardware maintenance manual), no photos there but a lot of good diagrams and a step by step guide how to disassembly the whole Helix.

Check chapter 1010, page 50 (page number printed in the document, not the page number your pdf viewer says) => click me!

Hope this helps!
