 N3Z45PB (i7, 8GB)

Ambient temperature 23C. Laptop mode.

Under 5% load the CPU works at around 60C. Using high performance power setting because else the CPU goes down to 800MHz and the computer becomes extremelly slow.

Under 20% load, the CPU warms up to around 70C.

I pretty much only use mine attached to the keyboard, lid closed, with external keyboard/mouse/monitor. The little that I have used it in laptop or tablet mode has been on battery, and my impression is that it seems better on battery.

Type 3701-2PU here.

The fan is on constantly when in the keyboard dock, even when system is at idle. The fans spin up immediately after docking.

I have installed the 1.14 updates to both the tablet as well as the keyboard dock with no change in behavior.

I made sure to set Lenovo Power settings to the most energy saving setting "Enable Battery Stretch", and still the fans do not shut off when the laptop is idle at the desktop. Looking at system properties, it is still showing the CPU at 1.8GHz out of 1.8GHz, so CPU throttling is not happening. Top-right corner heats up as if the laptop is under load, but it is not doing anything.

Re: Helix Fans Always Running

Wanted to add my experience.

My Helix got shipped to me with firmware 1.14 installed (got the tablet a few weeks ago) and the keyboard was 1.12.

I immediately noticed that the fans on the dock were quite audible and on a lot if not constantly.

Last week I went out east for a week for work and at the office, I really didn't notice the fans (I was listening for it)  Even in the hotel room, I never really noticed the fans much.  On/off yes but not constant.

Differences between regular set up and travel set up as follows:

Regular Setup:

 - Helix driving 24" monitor on Display Port and Think pad usb3.0 dock driving 24" monitor on displaylink.

 - Helix docked on keyboard in presenation mode (screen facing backwards.)

 - Regular power supply

 - Logitech unifying receiver

 - Wifi

Travel Setup:

 - Driving a smaller monitor (19") via display port (only at office)

 - Helix docked in laptop mode

 - Slim AC adapter with splitter to charge tablet plus a small device (ie: phone)

 - Different logitech mouse

 - Wired connected in office, with occasional wifi tethering to my phone.

I've briefly played with the different configurations but haven't yet replicated the quiet fan operation I experienced last week when I was out in Montreal office and the hotel!

Today, I did update the keyboard to 1.14 and while I feel the fan is less aggressive, it's still on all the time.

Hope something here triggers some brainstorming.

Purchased from CDW in Canada

2 of the 36984RU, and 1 of the 36984SU - All have fans that are running constantly with all the latest updates.

Hello,

I have been following this subject since before I purchased my Helix.  I have a 3697CTO. This has been one of the more active posts and to me represents a significant concern from those that own Helixes. Mine has the same issue of the fans running constantly when docked to the keyboard. They are "relatively" loud compared to my experience with other laptops. While it is annoying, I tend to assume that they are running for a reason and so have not installed the suggested third party software that will slow the fans down and reduce noise.

It would be wonderful if someone from Lenovo would come up with a solution or answer for this issue!  Even letting the community know that this was normal would at least help.  Please provide some solution!  This subject has been going for a long time now with no solution.

Third party hack is not really a solution...

I wonder if maybe it's a cooling fault. Like the laptop is just sitting there and it's hot on the back. CPU like 0 to 20%.....

My x200t has no issue. I would expect equivalent if not better ability to keep cool

It's not really a hack. It simply starts the fans at higher temperatures than by default.

When you install you can actually notice the fans have almost zero effect on temperature. Under low load my CPU is around 56 degress with fans completelly off. Changing them tu full speed lowers the temperarure by only 2 degrees.

That's it... One could then ask, if so, why the hell does the BIOS in default settings keep turning those fans round and round. It doensn't help much, only produced frustrating noise.
