ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3 info?

2011-08-07, 21:42 PM

I got an X220 Tablet, and so far the only ill-conceived design fad of mine has to do with the ethernet port location (in combination with 'laptop mode' and having a right-handed mouse thing going on...;)).

I'm looking into the ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3, but I've yet to find detailed pics of where the actual ports are located. Can anyone help/provide some pictures or perhaps a video?

Howdy,

All ports are located on the back like a traditional dock.  So, if you're sitting in front of the machine, NOT looking at the back, the ports are as follows from left to right; power, ethernet, Display port, VGA port, Audio jacks, 4 USB ports in a horizontal line.

Personally, I was supremely disappointed that the X220 fits the series 3 mini dock, but the X220T doesn't.  I wanted the DVI port.  Oh well...

Hope this helps...

I'm a bitconfused, are you comparing a table dock (Lenovo ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3) with a laptop expansion (ThinkPad UltraBase Series 3), or do I have it all wrong & is the UltraBase in fact not a snap-on layer to the laptop, but instead a dock to dock the laptop onto?

The Ultrabase is the bottom layer for the X series laptops (minus the X300,301).  The Series 3 Ultrabase is for the X220 and the X220 Tablet  and is not backwards compatible with previous generation X-series machines

The Series 3 Minidock goes with the T400S, T410 and up and the W510 and up.  The X220's docking port was relocated so it will fit on the Series 3 minidock, which is a nice variation on the config that allows an enterprise architect like myself to swap between my T420S, W510 and X220 using the same dock. Sadly, the X220 TABLET will not fit on the dock. Sorry, I didn't mean to confuse matters.

Actually, my confusion still remains: I think the ThinkPad Mini Dock Series 3 is a docking station that isn't supposed to be portable (i.e. portable laptop to snapped on to the nonportable dock), whereas the Ultrabase is designed with the 'road warrior' in mind (i.e. layer snapped on to the laptop, heavier but still portable).

Still, all things considered I'd love a mix between the Ultrabase and 19+ Thinkpad Battery. As a short-term solution I'm looking into replicating my USB port with a generic solution, turning a left side USB port in an USB hub with integrated ethernet port and possibly some extra (numpad/multimedia) keys, for use in tablet mode. I dislike not being able to adjust the volume while in tablet mode (other than through software).

So far I've got http://www.trust.com/products/product.aspx?artnr=14522 , which still doesn't resolve the weird righthanded ethernet port location on the X220 Tablet. Though I'm sure the location is suitable for when tablet mode is enabled...

Excellent! Big fan of your videos, they helped me narrow down the choice for the x220T! :)

Yep, this answers a lot already. It's much more informative than the content I was able to find on the net, so thanks for that! :)

You wouldn't happen to have an X220T still around, so the form factor with the tablet installed can be determined? The Ultrabase may be usable as a docking 'station', but Lenovo advertises it as portable and 'small enough to carry anywhere'.

I wonder whether the laptop would become 'bulky', or whether its pros (better port location, extra (optical)drive) outweigh that con.

As a side note, by default because the X220T is so light, tilting the display with one hand will also lift the base from the surface. Perhaps with the UltraBase attached, this would allow for a more robust stability of the laptop in terms of moving the screen without moving the whole laptop... ;)

Sadly I don't have the X220T anymore.  (it was a review unit).  I did manage to find a few images of the X220 laptop so I added those to kind of give you an idea.

It's small... but I wouldn't use it while being mobile.  I guess that was stated for those interested in having a DVD drive along with the tablet (yes there are people still using DVD drives surprisingly).  It's definitely going to make the system bulkier, and that's why it should be treated as a docking station.
