Re: Trackpoint moves on it's own..... (Lenovo X220T)

2018-08-22, 22:53 PM

Recently I bought a new ThinkPad E480 (it's my first laptop), and sometimes I notice the same problem only when I use the trackpad (on Windows 10 Pro). Pleases, then in a few seconds, it passes.

I write this barely able to get the cursor into the box on an X270, five years after this original issue was raised

Solution Proposal:
So I dont have direct knowledge about the internals or values that can be read by the sensors BUT! We can definetely track 3 things

1) Direction
2) Tilt or Pressure (Which can be transformed into speed of the cursor)
3) The sensitivy setting

Not interesting is Number 1 since that is already taken cares of (at least for me). Not tilting the nub in the same direction for too long will circumvent the issue.

But number 2 (and 3) seems not to be taken into consideration. Because from that we know we know the software knows the tilt/pressure and probably also the max tilt/pressure (in relation to the last `zero position`. Here I define it as the floating point value '1.0'.
So going from here its easy:

1) Assuming we know the value for 1.0 we know the tilt/pressure in every position
2) We can assume a value below threshold like 0.05 to probably be not intentional and above to be intentional (of course this relative to the outgoing position/pressure in which it zeroed itself last)
3) If it is below 0.05 `do zero` the nub if it is not: `don't`

This could also be a setting to accomodate for age of the trackpoint just like we have that for some controllers where you can define an inner dead zone in which the controller does not interpretate tilting of the stick.
So you could set a setting in between 0.0 and 1.0 for this "dead zone".

I own a Lenovo t480 and have the same issue.

Cheers Lukas

I have this problem too.  I have a fairly new Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Extreme, and up until recently all was well.  However, in the last few days, sometimes the cursor just moves off in one or other direction.  It is possible sometimes to halt it with pressure on the trackpoint; sometimes not.  Sometimes restarting fixes the problem, but not always, and that can be very inconvenient.  This is a top of the range computer with a top of the range price.  I did not expect problems like this.

I am getting the same issue on my Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga (gen 3). Glad I am not the only one with issues.

Same problem here. My fifth thinkpad if I am to count those I replaced as faulty (second-hand). With x200, this lasted for so long I nearly stopped noticing that. Still, with x230 this happens again.

(I would use the trackpad but it is even worse with windows 7, although I think it was good with windows 10).

Never noticed this issue on my company Dell laptop.

On second thought, now I realise that exactly the same issues are happening with x230's touchpad, so my bet is this is the ultranav drivers/software.

I have a T430 and the trackpoint is faulty on that too. It will jump to a different place on the screen and it often seems as though there is a erroneous mouse click too.I tried removing the red rubber tip and reseating the keyboard ribbon cable to see if that stopped the problem - it didn't.  I have disabled the trackpoint it in the driver and this stops the random behaviour.

I have solved my wandering cursor problem with my Lenovo S5 Thinkpad - I purchased an Alienware Area-51m R2.

It has been mildly entertaining to see how Lenovo doesn't take this forum seriously and fix this problem, but mostly it has been frustrating.

All the best to the rest of you forum frequenters because you've had the worst.

Eight years later and this still is a problem with Lenovo Trackpoint... not only that, it's worse with my new X1 Carbon (bought late 2020) than in the first X1 Carbon I bought many years ago.  Super frustrating and drains my efficiency.
