Upgrading and replacing hard drive

2009-06-22, 18:31 PM

I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X60  running XP and need to clone the hard drive onto a new, larger internal hard drive which will replace the existing drive. Have tried  Acronis, Ghost, and then Rescue and REcovery. For the first two after trying to boot from the new drive when it is inserted into the Thinkpad I just get a blinking cursor. R&R hangs because Ghost is installed, but uninstalling Ghost is also a big (and uncertain) production.

I have been unable to find any complete, step by step directions (including suggested settings) for any of these alternatives. Can anyone point the way?

Thanks

DrBlack, welcome to the forum,

I always do as follows;

1. Insert new hdd into ThinkPad

2. Insert original drive into usb caddy

3. Boot from Acronis rescue cd, created after installing Acronis, in an usb dvd/cd drive.

I manually resize the partitions so that the service partition is the same size, or a few MBs larger than on the original drive.

Has never failed me when cloning XP.

This thread will hopefully provide you with some usefull information.

Andy

Is there any limit on the size of the new hard drive? Norton said they had trouble with drives greater than 200 G and that a BIOS update might be required.

Thanks

No limit on size that I know of. I actually cloned an X61 Tablet today from a 160GB to a 320GB using the method that I described above, worked a treat. I have also cloned other system to 500GB drives.

One tip; when Acronis is finished and the system reboots, rather than let it reboot into windows press F1 to enter BIOS and one BIOS is loaded turn the system off. After disconnecting the external drives start the system normally.

Thanks Andy

Do I need to clone either of the two service drives (SERVICEV001)? As I understand it they are used for backup purposes by Rescue and Recover.

You can either everything or just Windows partition. They all work fine.

SERVICEV001 >> is R&R partition which is for restore back to factory default state. If you do not need that, you don't have to clone it since you will be able to do the same by using recovery disc.

It would be interesting to hear about your experiences as they would maybe be helpfull to other and future members.

Thanks

Hi Andy

Am glad to comment in full when and if this nightmare ever ends. Still ongoing with Ghost support, as new drive is not recognized, and computer apparently now needs a BIOS update. Old drive no longer is recognized (either in computer or in enclosure) either.

Eh? What's happened? Cloning a drive does not normally require a BIOS update.

I admit I gave upon Ghost years ago, use Acronis, unless of course things have gone so badly wrong you can't.

Re: Upgrading and replacing hard drive

AndyP,

I will be using Acronis 11 to swap internal drives when a new 7200 HD arrives (I will replace a 160 with a 320, I think). My machine -- X61t -- runs Vista Business but I guess Vista doesn't impose any different plan, right? The operation is in control of the Acronis software when I boot with the specially-made CD.

As I have just three USB ports I have to find the right power-efficient enclosure because my CDplayer/writer needs two cords, leaving just one for the extrenal HD.(Perhaps there is a power adaptor that can make the 5v)

First laptop in my house was a luggable Osborne! Now that was a cool computer. (...for its time!)
