Re: When is the Helix release date?

Didn't ask if this one had 3G, as I was not interested in the model and she gave me information though she couldn't sell it to me. I should have asked anyway, sorry.

I'd like to have the reference of the French i7/8 GB/256 GB/WWAN, so that I can start web searches on that. Using the 3698-6CG code mentioned above, I found several Swiss websites that have it in stock, and two of them confirmed by phone that their suppliers have actually it in stock (one of the suppliers was called and confirmed). Unfortunately these are Swiss keyboard layouts and they only deliver in Switzerland. With the French reference number, I hope I could find some similar resellers.

As for GPS, I am not that interested in it either, though it is still a good thing to have it available. But 3G is something more important for a travel device, for me at least. I usually tether with my phone, but it drains battery very quickly and makes it impossible to call. And all in all, I just find it more convenient to have a device capable of connecting to the Internet by itself, on its own, without relying on another device, at least when it comes to "portable" devices. But surely, if availability of the 3G version is terrible, I'll go for another one. Not sure yet whether non-GOBI Helix has 3G or not, though.

I've been lurking in the background for a few months, but have developed an obsession for the Helix, spending an inordinate amount of time trying to assimilate all the information, and failed. I've been watching both the Lenovo US and UK web site, and in the past week, the UK web site now has some dedicated Helix pages, although no means to pre-order anything. Then, hearing that people round the world are starting to get their orders is frustrating for us UK folk. What I have observed though... from a UK perspective..

The Lenovo UK Helix page only talks about a  4GB RAM configuration. That's very disappointing.

Most online retail outlets are referring to a model number of N3Z6CUK for the highest spec model and all these outlets confirm 8GB RAM. I've not seen any Lenovo reference to this style of model number. I've also seen a model number quoted as 3698-6CG for the highest spec unit. I've subsequently ordered one, due on 6-May.

My main concern leading up to ordering is the inconsistency with model numbers, descriptions, etc, with the vagueness always centered around the optional components. I did consider for one brief moment ordering the 'UU' model from the States, but I think the lack of "£" and other characters moving around on the keyboard would drive me mad. Be good to hear from anyone else in the UK trying to track these down..

Hello,  I too have been waiting for the UK release (I placed an order sometime back and the date keeps getting pushed  -the 5th May is the latest so far)  I too considered getting one from the US -but like you I'd rather have a UK layout.

I use Free Mobile (French carrier). Speed is somewhat very variable depending on coverage (and probably depending on a bunch of unpredictable things), but also depending on the device I tether too, oddly.

At the moment this carrier does not offer twin SIM cards to have a tablet and a smartphone using the same data account, but I hope this solution will spread and that Free will finally offer this service. If not, and if other carriers do it at a competitive price, I may consider switching to another carrier if I have two devices with built-in WWAN chips.

However you are right, I'm not going to spend a huge amount of money just for something I can do by tethering from my smartphone, especially as my carrier doesn't even offer twin SIM cards yet.

Sure thing I could tether my smartphone and it will work just the same way, but I feel like I could regret taking a WIFI only if 2 weeks later WWAN ready appears on the market..

Another Lenovo reseller confirmed me the i5/4 GB/180 GB in French layout is available. The i7/8 GB/256 GB is not, with no expected date in his documents. He has dropped an email to his Lenovo contact and said he will have an answer very shortly.

He said they are very close to Lenovo here, and they work with the largest supplier in Europe, so if they have not it, it might be very difficult to have it in other European countries as well. He was very surprised when I said there were at least two Swiss resellers whose suppliers had the i7 version in stock.

Anyway, European people who whant the i5 version may have it delivered quite soon.

No unfortunately he had very few information. I knew the models better than he did (which is not surprising so I'm not criticizing, he probably has to deal with a lots of brands and models while we are waiting the Helix since weeks), but the contacts he has may prove useful to know a bit more on availability of the i7 version.

Is the i5 the version you want, as long as it has 3G?
