Re: When is the Helix release date?

2013-04-09, 15:42 PM

My current company device is a Edge 15" and it's getting old so i placed my order last week through Ingram.  3698-4SU, everything but the 4G.  I'm really looking forward to getting this awesome device but i have a couple questions.

Where is the cool carrying case Like this one for the Tab 2.

Going through that PDF that was talked about earlier and comparing the part numbers to those at Ingram, it's really confusing.

My device, our cost around $1,900 before rebates and stuff.

The 3701-2QU has less hard drive, same ram and no NFC and costs an extra $1,000... why?

Why are there so many different editions of this device?  It took me a day just to figure out which one was most cost concious for the same specs as others.

The PDF also states 350nit on the monitor specs.... the Tab 2 says 400nit.  Dissapointing if it's true.

(Edit: Stuff)

Re: When is the Helix release date?

Got mine yesterday.  This will be replacing my Lenovo X61, which is actually leaking stuff out around the top buttons and in the screen.

Anyway I concur wit the comments above.  It does get warm in the upper right.  Good form factor.  Some have pointed out that it is but a bit top heavy and the screen in tablet mode does not go back far.  Although top heavy it does not "fall backas is the case the Samsung ATIV and the viweing angle is fine. So these are non issues for me now that I have it.    Fans are quiet.  I have a MS BT mouse (8000).  Works ok, but occasionally gets dropped and I have to turn the mouse off and on to get it to work again.  All my pens (X61; Samsung Note 10.1) work fine but noticed that the pen in the  Helix needs to be taken out before a pen can be used.  Need to see if there are settings to be able to change this.

Still setting things up, but the most important for me initially is its use in the classroom.  I have the mini-display port to VGA adapter.  Works well.  Traditional ppt presentation work well.  Traditional is landscape and image mirrored on the Helix and projector.  But it also works for my none traditional way of using the tablet as I did with x61.  In this way the second screen is extended and not mirrored.  What I simulate is an overhead projector with the image  in landscape mode on the tablet as well as the presentation.  With the powerpoint opened on the tablet, I put the ppt into presentation mode.  The presentation goes to the projector and the powerpoint which can be edited is on the tablet.  Now I can mark up the ppt on the tablet and this is recorded on the presentation for the students (the have a handout package that we mark up together this way).   With a powerpoint. (You can do this in landscape mode also).  I know that you can mark up in a  mirrored presentation, but this way allows more options in mark up.  In fact the helix looks to be even better as the aspect ratio allows for full ppt to be displayed on the tablet and the mark up tools on the screen table as well so they are easy to get to.  Much better that the X61.  Very cool.  So this was my first important test as the Helix will be replacing my x61 class room work horse.  I am still fine tuning this but good so far.

Some other important tests (for me :)) to be done:

WIDI:  I downloaded the drivers and tried it with my Samsung allshare cast dongle.  The Helix recognized the dongle but did not attach to it.  I have a Belkin screen cast coming in today.

PowerDirector 11:  Rendering 2d and 3d movies.

Photoshop 6: 2d and 3d image editing and simple movie editing.

Video: exploring various types of video files (e.g., wmv, mp4)

That is it for now.  Still on a learning curve for win 8.  No use complaining as there is no choice, but one can always go to the "home screen."

Please let us know if pressure sensitivity works in photoshop.  I was looking forward to getting a Surface Pro, but lost interest after it was revealed that there is no pressure sensitivity in PS.  I hope the results are better with the Helix.

I think the only place you can get it from now is directly from lenovo sales executives.  Mine was ordered about 2 week ago. They didnt have the i7 in stock yet so i have the i5 1.8GHZ with Intel HD 4000. 160GB SSD. 4GB RAM.

Was trying to get WIDI to work on it but no luck. i was using the drivers that came with it and then updated with the lenovo update.

Just upgraded all the intel stuff from there website and going to give it another go. Ill do a full stress test on it to

Ok ive done some stress tests!

The results are surprising. Even though i have an I5 1.8GHZ. It basically stays at 2.6GHZ with 4 Threads! No thottle what  so ever. It wasnt even that hot. My x61 would get crazy hot when i ran intel burn test.

Even in tablet mode it doesnt exactly throttle. It basically jumps around alot from 1.9GHz to 2.3GHZ mostly 2.1GHZ.

But never goes below 1.8GHZ.

Very impressed
