Re: Why is battery FRU 93P5032 not included in the recall?

Huh aliencam, that's good advice.  I have been 10 rounds with Lenovo on the phone, they have not wanted to escalate my issue.  I just followed your lead and bought the $60 battery off amazon.

Re: Why is battery FRU 93P5032 not included ?

Hi,

I face same problem with what apeared to be a perfectly fine battery with an easy 4 hrs charge till I let it fully discharge (ONCE). Now it shows 100% charged, but amber warning LED blinks and (the same) error message is that it cannot be charged.

It seems a ltlle bizarre that even with all updated Lenovo power utilites installed the battery will die so abruptly, without any warning. I wonder why this particular FRU (93P5032) was left out of recall, because there are several users facing the same problem. (as I read from recent forum posts)

I wonder if there is anyway for service centers to (force) charge our dead appearing batteries to an acceptable level (by laptop chager). I would hate to throw away an usable battery because the charger thinks it is dead - what about our environmental responsibility?

(My unit is out of warranty, but I would think that it being in warrranty repairs for a good part of the first year (for over an year) of ownership shall be compensated by giving this unit some benefit of doubt. I would be happy to provide you with with my long and unsuccessful repair history with Lenovo, at the end of which the nice second level Tech expert just gave up and requested me to let him close the case with partial resolution - I agreed to the gentleman )

I ran into the exact same problem today!  My battery only has 160 cycles and up until yesterday it was showing 5-6 hour battery life.

Plugged in my X61 tablet today and had the flashing orange battery light and the error message. Searched on the internet and stumbled onto this forum. Now my battery is also 93P5032--which is not covered under the recall.

I think Lenovo should extend the recall to this FRU because all the symptoms are the same. I had never had a battery die all of a sudden like this--and I've used Dell, HP, Toshiba in the past. My HP's battery is still going strong after 4 years!

I paid a lot of money for this tablet and didn't expect such a horrible experience. I'll be calling Lenovo tomorrow and asking for a courtesy free replacement.

Just wanted to add--I am wondering if this has anything to do with the verison of Power Manager software released in August (that is when I last updated mine)?  Maybe the new software is somehow killing the batteries?

I doubt that, because I run Linux on my laptop and never booted Vista to even download the new power manager.

wow, really impressive Lenovo.  Another X61-tablet in my household just had the battery die this morning. Same problem, the capacity was great yesterday, and bam, the controller board died today.  This laptop was purchased a month before mine was, and died a month later.

and, what a coincidence! the battery isn't covered by the $300 lenovo extended warranty they were scammed into buying.

good to know you spend $2300 on a laptop and warranty for it to become unusable as a laptop within 2 years.

did anyone have this happen to them WITHIN the warranty period?  it looks like this only happens right after your "battery warranty" expires.

Has anyone else's CMOS battery failed at the same time?  Mine did, so I am trying to gather some data points to see if there is a correlation. One scenario I can think of: The CMOS battery loses the ability to hold charge, so it constantly draws current (either from main battery or from power adapter) to try to keep charging.

Now one day you are running your laptop on battery power, and keep using it until the battery completely runs out of juice. At this point, the laptop probably goes into hibernation or standby, however you have set it up. You leave it sitting there all night. Overnight, the CMOS battery charging circuit sucks out the last 1% of the juice left in the main battery, causing your main battery to get over discharged and destroying the cells beyond repair.

Of course I have no idea if above theory is even fundamentally correct or not.  But it would be interesting to investigate this further if more people saw their CMOS battery failing at the same time as the sudden death of the main battery.

So how do you tell if you CMOS battery is failing? Turn off your laptop, remove the main battery and also remove the power cable. Let it sit overnight. Next morning when you start it up you will get a CMOS error and you can hit escape to boot into Windows at which point your time and date will be wrong (mine gets set to December 31, 1987).

Well I can't really recommend those counterfeit batteries they sell on Amazon.  Mine only lasted two (2!) charge cycles before it failed.  It's already down to 37% design capacity.
