Wireless N on X200 Tablet?

2009-08-31, 0:29 AM

I have a new X200 Tablet with teh default (Realtek?) Lenovo "11b/g/n Wireless LAN Mini-PCI Express Adapter II" wireless capability.

My router is a Dual Band N router (Netgear WNDR3300 - running latest firmware).

I can only see 80211g  :(

Other computers in my networt see "80211gn" just fine ... and if I plug in a USB N adapter, my X200 can see 802.11gn just fine.

I assumed that "11b/g/n" meant "N" capability ... am I missing something?

Ah HA ... found the problem...

My Netgear 'Dual Band' N router (WNDR3300) can't do 'N' on BOTH 2.4GHz AND 5GHz at the SAME TIME.

(The 11/b/g/n Mini-PC Express II is 2.4GHz only)

I only figured this out because Netfear has a new router (WNDR3700) that has a feature better than 'dual band' ... called ... "SIMULTANEOUS Dual Band"

LOL ...

Oh well .. at least i now know my thinkpad can do 2.4GHz N ... I just can't have both 2.4GHz N and 2.4GHz G (for my iphone,  etc.) at the same time .. :(

Any router can do 2.4GHz 802.11b/g/n at the same time. You don't need to use only 5GHz 802.11n to gain more bandwidth since 2.4GHz 802.11n can do 130Mbps for 20MHz channel width, and 270/300Mbps for 40MHz. They all are depending on your NIC and router. Anyway, using 802.11n is definitely better/faster than 802.11g.
